Last month there was a little buzz about the introduction of Music Maker at eMu. Well, I live close the the label's hq, and they put on free Blues concerts during the Fall in downtown Durham. I checked out Cool John Ferguson last night (about three hundred people showed up), and chatted a little bit with the rep (a little difficult considering that my 4yo was overtired.) I got a cd out of the deal ( a sixteen track collection of work that Taj Mahal did with the label's artists) and a DVD documentary--very, very generous. I'm probably going to the next concert, Pat Mother Blues Cohen with the awesome Bubba Norwood.

My wife sings with a new local blues band, Audio Blue. They've only been practicing together for a few months, and got their first gig as part of a student-organized benefit concert. This is pretty much for fun - no big ambitions, and they know they're rough around the edges; but my wife loves to sing blues. They will be playing at the Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts next Sunday at noon, for a more public unveiling. There are a couple of youtube videos from their first outing here:

Going Home

Daughter

Some worthy blues-rock albums

Today I received a CD I ordered:

Roll It Down by Ray Bonneville

Just had to post a quick note to rave a little about it (although I have only listened to half of it so far). Ray Bonneville became a favorite artist of mine when I downloaded the "Gust of Wind" album from emusic (still a favorite album of mine), so I knew this one would be good, and it sure is. Production is excellent - lots of tight separation of sound from the speakers. It's a very bluesy kind of CD. fRoots describes it as "a potent blues cocktail reminiscent of John Lee Hooker, JJ Cale...and Clapton." Sound samples here.

The CD credits on "Roll It Down" list Colin Linden as one of the producers, which reminds me that I had this album in my emusic SFL list, and after hearing the sound clips again, I've moved it up further to the top of the list for CDs to purchase:

Sad & Beautiful World (1975-1999) by Colin Linden

Album information here and emusic sound clips here.

Listening to this music makes me want to go dig out this CD and listen to it again - another really fantastic blues-rock album:

More Storms Comin' by Mark Selby.

eMusic has Selby's CD, Nine Pound Hammer (or some similar title?), which is very good, but NONE of Selby's albums can touch 'More Storms Comin' (unfortunately not available on eMusic, even though it's on the Vanguard label). It is a true classic, IMO. I first discovered it when I was in a Hastings store at the time they were playing it. The track "Smoked" is what caught my attention and caused me to ask the guy working there what they were playing and where could I find it. He led me to the blues section, to which I said, "That's blues?" Well, yes, after listening to the whole album, it's definitely blues. I have very few CDs that equals the excellent production of this one. I was immediately impressed with the full superb sound of all the instruments and the vocals. The tracklist includes a variety of styles, and they are all just top-notch. This CD is very, very infectious. You need to play this one loud.

Amazon link where you can hear samples (although they probably won't do the CD justice) is here.

Now I've got to go finish listening to Bonneville, and then dig out that Selby CD.

I had seen this was coming out but poohed-poohed it without the slightest interest in checking it out. I mean, really - Dr. House singing and playing old southern blues?

Then I saw his interview on TV this weekend which made me think I should check this out. It at least got me interested enough to listen to the samples. Well, maybe I short-changed him. Anybody have this? Whadayathink?

Was looking to download one track (38 slug) from this album (http://www.folkways.si.edu/albumdetails.aspx?itemid=454) , but not available for download. Did a search on eMusic, etc. to see if available there or anywhere else, but no luck. Does anyone know where one can purchase a download of the album or the track? (Or does anyone own this and be willing to rip just the one track for me?)

Best,

I've been wanting to add some Zydeco to my collection, but don't know much about it (other than I like it). Who are the artists I should check out? I realize a google search might give me some answers, but I would trust recommendations from those here more than anonymous ones on the internet.

I know this is a rather specific question and it is possible that no one will have any recommendations, but figured that if anyone did it would be the folks here.
