You hear a fantastic group from that period of greatest rock innovation (late 60s/early 70s) whose album(s) didn't sell well and they then just faded into obscurity. Don't you ask yourself why!?

Also, there's nothing better than being introduced to an extraordinary album by a band that you have never heard of.

Here's my example to start things off, "Jonesy" and their outstanding 1972 album "No Alternative".

AMG says "No Alternative was Jonesy's debut album, and its title track best summed up their aspirations of fusing improvisational jazz to prog rock with barely a thought to commercial consequences". Some people compare them to early King Crimson.

https://www.allmusic.com/album/no-alternative-mw0000468035.

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1331

Looking forward to seeing all your examples.

In response to the clamor for this topic, here goes.

I used to read history books on the subway (1 1/2 to 2 hours a day of something to do besides be freaked out by the other subterranean denizens, oh, and worry about London style bombings - What, me worry?) but I got to the point where I'd start falling asleep while reading - very embarrassing to drop a hardcover or large softcover book out of your unconscious hands, so I read fiction now which works better for me (in between bouts of Sudoku).
Latest binge - I'm on Book 2 of The Wheel Of Time series by Robert Jordan, which apparently is what many other George R. R. Martin fans/haters read in between volumes of A Song Of Fire And Ice. I didn't know about Book 1 The Eye Of The World at the start - it's like The Shire but with humans, boring!, but it got better and it says something that I'm 2/3 of the way through Book 2 The Great Hunt. I do feel slightly guilty like I'm wasting time I should be devoting to better pursuits but what the heck. Gotta do some work but I figured I'd throw out the first ball.

I thought it would be interesting to highlight our favourite Rock albums from what many people (including those in their teens, twenties, thirties) regard as Rock's outstanding and most creative era.

I'll start with what I think is the best rock album of all time! "The Doors" s/t first album from 1967.

To quote All Music Guide, "A tremendous debut album, and indeed one of the best first-time outings in rock history, introducing the band's fusion of rock, blues, classical, jazz, and poetry with a knockout punch".

Would be interested to hear everybody else's favourites.

https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-doors-mw0000650088

Melbourne is back into compulsory mask wearing indoors from last night so will be wearing my "The Doors" first album matching mask and t-shirt in honour of this post!

My preference is for covers from the 1960s and 1970s, particularly the psychedelic ones but it's totally up to you.

So I'll start with one of my all-time favourites "Wow" by Moby Grape and I just love the track "Can't Be So Bad".

The Album Cover Art Gallery website says "Surrealistic deco art on both covers and lyrics reflecting the turmoil of the changing times make for an interesting slice of the sixties".

http://tralfaz-archives.com/coverart/M/moby_grape_wow.html

Just for anyone else still in the should I/shouldn't I with the latest iTunes upgrade...I just upgraded to iTunes 10.5 and iOS5 on Win 7 and a latest gen iPod touch. I have not had the widely reported problems with the upgrade killing the iPod touch - that part went smoothly. But iTunes has in the past always been stable for me, for all its quirks. The latest version, however:

1. crashes/freezes at least once per session, often during sync.
2. Randomly decides to lose some or all of my playlists. (This may be related to the crashes). Since my sync is built on smartlists, this means it then keeps deleting Gigs of music from my Touch, 2which then takes ages to restore. Just now it seems to have lost my three largest/most used playlists (=~35Gig). I tried the steps here: http://osxdaily.com/2010/12/07/itunes-playlists-disappeared-recover-missing-itunes-playlists/ and it did not work.
3. Deletes file info randomly. I was using tags in spare fields to e.g. demote which were complete albums - specifically I had the phrase "FullAlbum" in the "Sort Show" field. That field has been wiped clean for all of the songs that were on the playlists that disappeared.

Not a happy customer. Any suggestions? I have a recent backup of the iTunes folder on an external drive, but I think it was before I upgraded. Might that help me?

Mark your calendars because in November 2010, eMusic is adding more than 250,000 tracks from Universal Music Group to its catalog, the single largest addition ever!

This addition comes as part of our mission to offer members a rich catalog that is both deep and broad, with every day low prices that make music discovery as affordable as it is rewarding.

In order to continue to grow our catalog and to insure a sustainable business in the long-term, we need more flexible pricing. So we are changing from a credit-per-track system to currency pricing. Starting in November, you'll see tracks and albums priced in dollars and cents instead of credits.

Your membership will continue just as it is today, and your monthly payments will not change. While some popular tracks will be more expensive, members will still enjoy savings of 20% - 50% compared to iTunes a la carte prices.

For more details about these changes, including the new catalog, new currency pricing, and how this affects your account, please read the full announcement.

learn more

By growing our catalog, our aim is to also grow our member base, which in turn will help fund improvements to the service. We're already working on a music locker, which should allow you to stream your music from any desktop or mobile device, and new social features to better connect you with other members.

We also want to assure you that the heart of eMusic is not changing. Our approach will remain proudly, stubbornly idiosyncratic - we'll continue to champion music that represents clear artistic vision and quite simply, records that we find inspiring, whether by legends or upstarts.

For questions about your account, please send email to comments@emusic.com. To provide general feedback about this change, please complete our Member Survey.

Sincerely,
Your Friends at eMusic

In case you are new to emusers, we are a little group of
music enthusiasts that like finding and sharing music across all genres (especially
stuff that is less well known to the general public) and discussing it without
shouting or insults. This board originally started as an outgrowth of
discussions on the old discussion board at the digital music service
emusic.com, but emusers has no connection to emusic.

Here's a brief primer (with credit
to an earlier version by @thomnottom) on the main threads that weave their way
through our little board and where we most frequently hang out:

It's All About Me

Hello
– If you are new, introduce yourself here and be welcomed!

Current Listening

The bulk of the daily traffic happens on our “What are you
listening to right now?” threads. The current one is Number 17
(but if we moved on and forgot to update this, look for a more recent one with
“What are you listening to right now” in the title. It will be somewhere near
the top.) This is where we post our current listening but it’s also a good place
to make passing comments that others are likely to see. I’ll include a list of
past threads at the end. We like to retire these threads some time after they
go over 1000 posts.

New Releases and discoveries

Another frequent and valued activity is posting news
about new releases and other discoveries. The following threads focus on that from various angles:

Soundcloud, Bandcamp - New / Upcoming Releases, Announcements etc. – What
it says, new release announcements from those services, especially ones with

Just a heads up, probably this evening (NZDT), if not, then in the weekend I'll be doing a point release upgrade of the forum software in order to keep to the philosophy that a little bit of work frequently is better than a lot rarely. Also, there's a security update out. You probably won't notice anything, but when if I cock up, things may be haywire for a few minutes.

http://vanillaforums.org/discussion/29555/vanilla-2-1-9-released

Maybe they'll also fix the issue where the editor swallows a URL if it's the last thing entered. But it's not on the changelog, so I doubt it.

Anyone see any interesting albums being funded via Kickstarter these days?

A couple weeks ago I got an e-mail from singer/songwriter Ben Carroll (whom my wife and I met on the night I proposed to her) asking for people to check out his Kickstarter project to fund his 3rd album. Fortunately it got done before the deadline.

This week I got an e-mail from Charlene Kaye (whom several of you are familiar with via Bandcamp) regarding her next Kickstarter-funded album, which easily hit the target with 3 weeks to go.

So I'm curious if there are any other good musicians out there looking for money!

Like I need a new full time hoby.

I realise it probably isn't possible as it is hardly in Bandcamp's best interest. I don't want to cut and run, it has just got so big and unweildy, starting from scratch has an appeal.

Also I know for a fact I have albums still on my Wishlist that I have actually bought, how the heck would I remove those?

All suggestions welcomed.

Some recent dicussions have prompted me to buy a turntable, mainly to listen to my LP collection again. I will buy one that has a USB lead so that I can also convert LPs to digital as well. Some turntables come packaged with Audacity as part of the cost. How good is it? Are there any better alternatives? I haven't yet decided yet on a specific turntable, with several on my shortlist. My budget is around £200-300 ($230-$330). Ideally the turntable should be able to connect to my Bose set up by bluetooth, although i can use an auxillary lead instead. If I find I am using it quite a lot I wil then upgrade to some speakers. Any advice, suggestions welcome

Over time scouring the depths of our flawed but once fleetingly beloved eMu, a lot of music accumulates that I want to promote in a list, but the genre is either unclear, inconsistent, or too rare to get to the magic number of ten. Here’s a female vocalist’s list of her own spanning lots of different styles, often within the same album or even individual songs.

1. “Favourite Attic” - Romie (2017). The one that spawned this genre-defying list when it wouldn’t stick to folk, rock, or even chamber pop consistently. Blending of two ladies’ pretty voices is definitely not the usual kind of thing I listen to or put on a list, and I’m a little uneasy about leading this one with it. A bargain at $2, in any case.

2. “S/t” - Sväva (2017). Two of my go-to favorite comparisons in one nice EP, also for $2. If there were a pageant to crown a Dutch synth-pop band that might be what it would sound like for Mimi Parker of Low to sing for Ladytron, this would be my nominee. https://svavaband.bandcamp.com/album/sv-va-2

3. “Ens Endurem El Vent” - Namina (2019). For a foot fetishist, painting one’s toenails on the album art might be just as sexy as other female vocalists try to look on theirs, but it’s actually apt for Namina’s different sound. The pitch of her voice is lower than most, and these songs are coolly subdued overall. A mighty nice way to spend 99 cents. https://namina.bandcamp.com/album/ens-endurem-el-vent-ep

4. “Beneath the Waves” - Seacircle (2019). Not gonna lie, almost no one will like this album, but I think risk-taking should at least be acknowledged. Experimental string accompaniment of breathy moaning, screaming, and something like improvised scat, only occasionally and then barely decipherably in English. Could you be anything but enticed? She does have quite a range, and sometimes these totally out of left field albums can be the perfect aural palette-cleanser. Maybe for fans of This Mortal Coil and DAUU, though I don’t know if either of them actually has fans. Definitely for those who want to be surprised by every track on an album. Is it jazz?

5. “S/t” - Tragavenao Orquesta Afrobeat (2014). My Afrobeat knowledge is spotty, but I don’t know any other groups from Venezuela or whose lead singers are women. Latin-Afro-splendid. https://tragavenao.bandcamp.com/

6. “Recreate” - Tawiah (2018). I don’t know if I’ll get around to an R&B/soul list, so best not to sit on this 99-cent EP by a semi-famous British singer. Variety in understated, generally electronic accompaniment helps me to appreciate a style of music I don’t listen to very often. She seems almost restrained compared to U.S. counterparts (who seem to compete to be unrelentingly sensual and hold a note as long as possible while shouting), like she doesn’t want to raise her voice, and I doubt these would make a splash on commercial radio. Definitely how I prefer new R&B to be. Ask me what the top pop divas have over her, and I will say nothing (though you’d be asking the wrong audiophile). Not sure why we should be so lucky to get a deluxe edition with three bonus tracks. https://tawiahmusic.bandcamp.com/album/recreate-deluxe-2

7. “The House That Jack Built” - Jesca Hoop (2012). I think I prefer her solo work to collaborations with Iron & Wine, especially 2017’s “Memories Are Now.” Elsewhere in pre-Sub Pop work she offers an altogether alternative take on folk music. These are light synth-rock songs whose vocalist sounds more suited to soulful folk, though of course she can really belt it out when called for. I think “Peacemaker” is awesomely seductive, with unique structure, vocal harmony, and overall production, and I like the angular, dirty sound and theme of “Dig This Record” a lot. Each song is distinctively passionate enough that your faves could be entirely different. Not sure how much promotion she needs (topping 100 user ratings on AMG is usually a disqualification for my recs), but I’ll bet there’s still plenty of folks who’ve never heard (of) her.

8. “План побега (Plan Pobega/Escape Plan)“ - Обе Две (Obe Dve/Both Two) (2018). A short and heavily produced pop album, but it avoids obnoxious excess while still being catchy at a slower pace and without ever resorting to a driving dance beat. Her voice is confident to the point of defiance but very emotional, pretty (as on the third track), and occasionally vulnerable, subject to some studio tricks to transition between tracks but never the scourge of autotune. As a whole, this subtly shifting vocalist seems as comfortable in Putin’s favorite Abba-esque territory as cool electro R&B, far removed from the Eurotrash nonsense populating most remaining labels. To be highlighted and praised, unless she’s singing about invading Crimea. Probably glad I can’t understand the lyrics, so this is the perfect album to imagine pop poetry set to nice melodies for twenty minutes.

9. “Veni Veni” - Helium Vola (2009). They’ve got several albums, but if you’re not sure whether operatic techno will be something you find novel or hate (there’s not much room for middle ground, as they empty the tank on every song), there’s nothing lower risk than a 99-cent EP.

10. “Adoro” - Sof Tot/Uji (2019). Soaring vocals in the background and foreground may be high or low in pitch, but these songs are all well produced from top to bottom. Flirts with hip-hop at times. She also has an interesting way of starting a lyrical sentence as if speaking but then singing the last word to punctuate, backed by a hypnotic duet of moaning on both “Entrarse” and “Un Paso Más.” It’s Latin synth-pop, and it’s an inexpensive EP.

No list like this would be complete without soliciting a little mansplaining. Would anyone like to speculate in the most gender-stereotyping way (or with more nuance and attempts at respect or even drawing actual women into the conversation) about why folks on these music discussion forums (and I’m guessing music obsessives themselves…record collectors almost certainly) tend to be men? I think I’ve only interacted with one confirmed female here in about half a year but am assuredly not asking all women to declare themselves. If this isn’t the space to go anthropological, I apologize.

On other lists but worth mentioning & recommending again: ONUKA. “Rosa” - Koyari (2017). 13 Year Cicada. “Twin Earth” - Aphir (2017) https://aphir.bandcamp.com/album/twin-earth. Holly Golightly. “One Ethiopia” - Gigi (2000).

Here is my suggestion for this thread, which I am hoping will be a long-term slow burner. I'd like to hear anyone talk about an album (any genre) they particularly like, appreciate, or find personal meaning in. It does not have to be a new release, on bandcamp, in your all time top ten, or in any way new to the rest of us - there are other threads for those kinds of things. The comments do not have to show musical expertise or musicological analysis. If you do have technical knowledge or great musical vocabulary to bring to the description, that's great too, but I am not thinking of this as an expert thread.
What I am after is some account of what you have found in the album (or even song) that might enrich my appreciation of it if I listen to it, like sitting with you on a back porch playing the song and having you tell me what you hear in it, so that maybe I can hear it too, gaining something by borrowing your ears. It might be sound- or lyrics-related or just how the piece spoke to you. I'll kick the thread off in a moment.
