Anyway, last night the wife and I went to the Red Stag Supper Club Block Party and saw some Twin Cities acts (all of which are on eMusic and/or Amie).

The first band we saw was Black Blondie a female R&B/Pop act. They are a four piece with vocals, keyboards, bass, and drums (only the drummer is male). It's not necessary my favorite style, but they were quite enjoyable, and the lead singer has some serious pipes. Plus they used a stand up electric bass for most of the show, and anyone who uses a stand up bass is cool in my book. My favorite song of theirs is Dressed to Kill a Mockingbird, which they started the show with. They only have one track on eMusic, but their most recent album is still quite cheap on Amie: Link. I'd give their performance a B-. (I strictly apply the A=Great, B=Good, C=Average, D=Poor, F=Fail scale, so a B- isn't bad.)

Next up was Romantica, a Folk/Americana type band that has long been a favorite of mine. The lead singer/songwriter is originally from Ireland, but has been in the Twin Cities for about 15-20 years. Another four piece with the standard guitar, rhythm/slide guitar, bass, and drums lineup. They played one of my personal favorites The National Side, but not the other Ixcatan. About half the show was new stuff off an album that is hopefully due out in October (according to their merch sales guy), and if the album is as good as the live performances it should be a good one. They aren't on Amie, but their 2007 album (which I highly recommend) is on eMusic: Link. Last night's show gets a B, the music is higher, but the stage presence just isn't where it needs to be for a higher grade.

The last band we saw (there were others on the bill) was hip hop group Heiruspecs. I've seen them before, and they never fail to bring it. They play with a full band (sometimes even with horns), and last night it was 2 MCs, keyboard, guitar, bass, and drums. Original member and bassist "Twinky Jiggles" wasn't at the show last night because his father was getting married, but the fill in did an admirable job. MC "Felix" is an excellent hip hop front man, and MC Muad'dib is a phenomenal beatboxer. They played a number of my favorites including Guns and Knives and Not You then closed the show with probably my overall two favorites 5ves and Get Up. All I can say about this group is if you get a chance to see them, do it. That goes even if you aren't really a hip hop fan, because they are simply a fantastic live act. Their best LP is on eMusic: A Tiger Dancing, but I also strongly recommend the compilation Ten Years Strong that is still cheap on Amie: Link. They get a solid A for last night's show.

We also caught a couple songs of ELO cover band ELnO, but not enough for me to review.

I got into town Friday afternoon.  What I got to see:

Ralph Towner in a beautiful church
Spiritualized in a cool concert hall
Fire! in a cool dive

I ate at a crappy sushi joint on Gay Street (Nama).  Literally inedible.
I ate an EXCELLENT Asian restaurant called Kaizen.  I mean, it was so good, it made me want to move to Knoxville just so I could eat there full-time.  I had the fried oyster fried rice bowl, which had fried oysters, kimchi, fried egg, tamarind-chile syrup, fried shallots, fresh herb.  I also did two steamed buns... the thai sausage and the eggplant.  I was in heaven.
Also, had some nice tea and an iced latte in a pretty serene environment in a place called Jacks.  It's conveniently located venue central on Gay St.

Only a couple months ago Rolling Stone called it the 3rd best club in America.

Very reluctantly and rather sadly I have reached the decision that I will not be able to go. Pressure of work and work-related travel is very high at the moment and I am getting very tired. I have to simplify the schedule to get through the next month or so, and have been torn between really wanting to see the show and not being able to face adding a drive to Chicago and back next Friday night. So I'm sitting on two tickets, cost $48.

I'll post these on my institution's deals board later but thought I'd offer them here first. Can anyone use these? I'm not really looking for any specific return - maybe you could get me something off my amazon wishlist or something. The tickets are in PDF format, so emailable. The show was unusual even before it started in that the ticket limit was set at two, all tickets were will call only, and they were nontransferable. Clearly they wanted to avoid scalpers, but Ellen saw someone offering the tickets for sale on craigslist for $250 a pop. The guy claimed he'd meet the buyers at First Ave and get them in, but based on how things were set up I somehow doubt he was allowed to do that.

Anyway, some other interesting observations from before the show: 1) Recently I've started to feel old when I go to First Ave, but not last night. We were clearly on the lower side of the curve. This ended up being a good thing because even though we were in the later half of people to get in, the oldsters were avoiding the floor in front of the stage so we ended up center stage about 30 feet back from Simon's microphone; 2) I've never seen First Ave completely full more than a half hour before the show starts. There wasn't an opener though so no one wanted to be even a few minutes late; and 3) I've never seen that many instruments onstage at one time. There were so many that the First Ave projection screen that is usually down and used to announce the show start and end by being raised/lowered had to be up the whole time. There wasn't room for it be lowered. I counted at least 14 guitars onstage and there ended up being several more brought in from offstage during the show (I'll get into more of the instrumentation in a minute). If there had been an opener it would have taken well more than an hour just to reset the stage.

The show itself started about 15 minutes late, but it was freakin' phenomenal and went on for 2 solid hours. Paul Simon may be turning 70 in October but he still has the voice and the fingers for the guitar. Only played two Simon and Garfunkel songs ("Last Living Boy in New York" and "Sound of Silence", the later solo acoustic and the crowd was so in awe people weren't even singing along), but played all the solo songs I know apart from "You Can Call Me Al" which he is apparently not playing on this tour, and even covered The Beatles with "Here Comes the Sun." The truly amazing thing, though, was the band. They were tight and had riddum. A truly rare combination. It was an eight piece: lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, 3 multi instrumentalists, and 2 percussionists. I say 3 multi instrumentalists, but I think everyone other than the rhythm guitarist played at least one instrument that was completely different from their main instrument. A non exhaustive list of the instruments used apart from all the guitars (one song actually featured 5 acoustic guitars): grand piano, at least four keyboards (I didn't have a good view of one of the multi instrumentalists so he could have had more), two drum kits (one primarily made up of toms and the like), trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, soprano sax, tin whistle, two different flutes, two different accordions, uke, and more african and other hand held percussion instruments than I could keep track of. It was truly amazing watching this group of guys get into a serious groove and go to town on all these instruments. Here's a lousy cell phone picture of the band:

All I can say is, if you have a chance to catch this tour...do it. And if you have a chance to see one of the small club shows? Even better.

I only became familiar with both of these musicians in the last couple of weeks. Both musicians have put out spectacular albums out this year. Rafal Sarnecki (guitar) released "The Madman Rambles Again" on the Fresh Sound New Talent label and Adam Baldych (violin) released "Magical Theatre" on Eleet Records. Both albums absolutely blew me away. Sarnecki's album (which I own) I've listened to repeatedly over the last two weeks and the Baldych album (which I don't yet own) but was able to listen to almost the whole thing the other day and individual songs on his reverbnation and artist site and they're just amazing. I highly recommend taking advantage of the opportunity to see them both live together. Please someone take pictures and post them here.

Rafal Sarnecki, as it so happens, is tomorrow's (Wednesday) AAJ free mp3 of the day. Adam Baldych will be the featured dotd on August 31st.

I'll try to write more later, but Lightning Bolt put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Gibson shreds the bass better than most guitarists and Chippendale is absolutely nuts on the drums. Anywho, without going into too much detail I'll say that it was awesome. We got there late and only saw the last couple songs of Ted Leo (which was a bummer because he sounded good), but that did give us plenty of time to settle in for the main act. For starters, they are freakin' tight! We're talking up to 8 people on stage and they would just blaze through some of their faster songs. Secondly - NEKO CASE... SWOON!

Seriously, even from way back she was hot as hell and her voice is just... damn. Even better live. And I have to admit that the other woman - Kathryn - has a damn fine voice, too. I can see why she fills in when Neko isn't around. Overall they seemed to focus mostly on Twin Cinema and Together - which are my favorites so that worked out well. They even threw in "Mass Romantic", the song that introduced them to me, and then finished with "Sing Me Spanish Techno". In between there was some funny banter and awesome playing.

They have set up misting tents, have opened an air conditioned area on the third floor of the grandstand, and are allowing people to bring two unopened 23-oz bottles of water, AND you can refill your bottles there.

Last I heard, over 50,000 tickets have been sold to people in 47 states.
