Thanks for the recs. So far I've picked up McCoy Tyner's The Real McCoy, Herbie Hancock's Empyrean Islands, and Hank Mobley's Roll Call. Possibly more to come.

@srm Glad you like it. Yeah, lots of freebies on that site. I really need to see him live.

Finally getting around to sample some of those Blue Note albums on sale. This one will be a definite purchase. -
I always thought James Taylor was Folk/Rock.

Thanks for the recs, starting to listen to some now. On a side note, I noticed that Herbie's Head Hunters does not have any album-only tracks. Same for Bitches' Brew (I noticed, and took advantage of, a few months ago).

Not quite as screeching, but how about these rather rockin' tunes:

Any recs for some of those bargains? Looks like a lot to wade through.

I'll be checking out Balmorhea's older albums, but from everything I've read this one is a real turning point for them. Really fantastic - don't even bother with the Pitchfork review

I've had it happen more on Last.fm. It's usually when I get some freebie mp3s from some website and I end up being one of 10 people to have played the song.

Never actually been friended, but I've received messages, shouts, e-mails, etc. from artists like that.

It'll be interesting to see which way it goes. I'll be attempting to make it go down, with perhaps some more money going to Amie Street than before but not as much as my annual plan. Since I still feel that mp3 downloads are typically not worth more…

An old friend of mine once swore me to secrecy on a band name he wanted to use, but I'm pretty sure that project is not coming to fruition. He wanted to start a ska band and call it: Ska Bayo

Damn, I missed the Facebook giveaway. But I've won some from them on Twitter (including the new Vampire Weekend). Amie Street rocks.

I already own that Secret Machines album and grabbed it for free anyway so I could REC it. The Kevin Barker disc that just dropped sounds excellent, too. He's the guitarist for Vetiver - it's currently $1.43.

@frogkopf - That one popped into my head as soon as I saw this thread title. There's a lot of bad band names that popup on Amie (I'm looking at you, Crimson Razorback) but that …

Right now I'm listening to my little girl waking up from her nap. But before that it was the new Four Tet - which is excellent.

I always assumed that "experimental" on Amie Street meant "unsigned band that does not play their instruments well."

Now I gotta remember what was on Louise and Jerry's jukebox (everybody's favorite in Hoboken). I seem to recall The Replacements' "Bastards of Young" being a favorite.

The Stax set was available as both the complete thing (which I grabbed) and the individual volumes. It's possible that they just aren't bothering to repost the box set since all of the material is still there.

I'm listening to lots of perfect pop songs...

Make a simple joke over there and get accused of bullying - why would anyone even want to post there?

Bopping along to some Gui Boratto. As much as I'm enjoying Chromophobia, his material got even better with an increased use of vocal samples.

@frogkopf - I think you're making way too many assumptions, the biggest one being: "People tend to let the samples play out for the whole album, even if they are not intending t…

I would - it's really just another service. I believe it's been one of the more popular ones in the UK for awhile (since so many sites don't offer much outside of the US) but only recently started a heavy expansion into the US at the end of last yea…
