Dispatches from the road.

Day one was spent battle the abyss known as Jersey. Nine hours to drive 340 miles...

Self-Portrait from the Road
We arrived at 1am to our hotel in Maryland and this is what I looked like after snatching a scant 4 hours of sleep before my daughter bounced me awake for breakfast.

Over the water we flew chasing the last ray of the sun.

We arrived hastened by winds and a low fog gathered tightly about us.
Near sunset, the dunes outside the house we are renting.

With all the fury of my beloved the sea threw itself at me.
A storm threatens the beach outside our backdoor.

And I left the clouds and rain behind today -- sleeping in Independence, MO, tonight, on my way to Denver. Eight hours of driving today, nine on tap for tomorrow.

Thanks to streaming over the internet, I just watched the fireworks of Thunder Over Louisville. Always a great show, but so much better in person when you can feel the show as well as see it. Sort of like feeling the fury of the sea.
  • I love that ocean picture. Well all of them really, but especially that one. It's been too long since I've seen the ocean.

While the house slumbered I chased the dawn over the dunes.
I woke up just after sunrise but managed to tumble over the dunes in time to catch some of the later morning light.

Last night's storm left the seas still rolling and roaring.

    Breakfast on the run
However, the birds found endless sport in outrunning the tide while catching breakfast.
  • Love the pics. If you've got some time to kill in Jersey on your way back, let me know. I'll gladly play host.

@thom, I'll let you know if we pass back up through NJ. Wife is hinting that she'd rather return home by way of Ohio before entering the Garden State. ;-)
  • Excellent photos and a lovely child. . .

    - Thanks !
  • So many talents on this board.

    Goodbye, Sea.

Last morning on the beach when I finally got up in time for the sunrise. I wish I was still there.
  • Great photos, Elwoodicious. I'll try to put a few up from my trip to Sicily. Unfortunately we never saw Etna once, even though that was the main purpose of the trip. We got as high as we could into the snow, but it was so foggy the jeeps to the top were not running. But we did see some sun on other days
  • Thanks! I really would love to see your photos from Sicily, it's on my list of places I desperately want to visit.
  • I'll try to put a few up in the next few days. I'll need to reduce the size of the images first. It is really worth going to if you can - absolutely loved it. But the drivers are like nothing you'll see in the States or Northern Europe!
