yesterday's time: 29.45 for 3 miles. i was on a brand new treadmill and it has the latest touchscreen features. i need to research it a bit more but it is designed much like a car's integrated entertainment display...you can plug (+ charge!) your ipod then operate through the 20 x 16 touchscreen. i have an older classic ipod and only keep .mp3's on it...my guess is the .mp4 video would be a pretty sweet - (on 2nd thought, dbd publicly viewing porn while getting sweaty may not be such a good thing...)
finally, it gives you summary work-out data which you can save + track over time (this i have to research a bit more). the one - and very immediate - problem i can see is the summary info gets a bit skewed because the first minute gets eaten up while you set up your work-out and then any cool-down time skews the averages. my average speed was 5.66 mph - which included a 3 minute cool down at 2 mph and a first minute of set-up which probably wasn't more than 1 mph.
finally finally, i really hate running...will start riding my bike to the gym - just need to wrestle with the fact i shower at the gym + then will do the exertion thing to bike 5 more miles home.
@Katrina - So sorry to hear the news. I'm starting my own job hunt but am thankful it's just because I hate my job and not because I don't have one. It's pretty rough out there these days.
@katrina, do you like hiking? It is a hell of a workout and I find its good for the mind as well. I'm not in love with running, it's more that I like the feeling of pushing myself. My heart belongs to mountain biking, I could ride every day all day long.
Rub it in! All those times are fantastic. Me? Hip replacement scheduled for next week. Maybe I can get back to walking miles instead of mile, which is all I have been able to do for a few months now.
mommio, hope your surgery goes well. The several folks I know who have had hip replacements, all had good things to say about it improving their quality of life.

ok. i should pull back on the running harsh. today's time was 37.51 for 4 miles (avg. 9.27 mile) - each mile was faster than the preceeding. meaning my last lap was the fastest and i felt i could have kept going without much issue. tight schedule today, tho.
i'm also mixing in a few days where i do not run and do strength training...i want to avoid "the grind" mentality which can kill things.
you can save the data to a usb drive, it turns out - i'll start doing it. next goal is to do 5 miles and feel comfortable with it - unlike that insane jelwood-inspired first 5 mile adventure.
and yes, tennis is my favorite sport. i played quite a bit back in the day. and i hope to get holden into it as he has gobs of talent and energy.
BB, I still have PTSD from that tennis shorts shot your were flashing about. Sometimes late at night the vision of your pasty white, pixie stick legs capped by the tiniest little Katy Perry inspired shorts cracks into my mind like midsummer's thunderstorm.
uh huh. "chicken loaf" is the more accepted description of my leg-flesh-tint. i think the jimmy connors shorts back in the day challenged the notion of functionality. it was damn near impossible to cram the 2nd ball in your pocket.

@dbd: is it true the barcelona team maintained possession of the ball 70% of the time? i only saw highlites of the messi goal...in which the two defenders looked like foosballers. clink. 68
@Brittleblood - Yes Barcelona did keep possession for that much time! As a life long Manchester United fan I watched the game live, and like many/most MU fans felt dissappointed at the loss but not annoyed. We were beaten by a better team in an excellent match. United were not that bad at all, just Barca are so much better than anyone at this time - being the second best team in the World at the moment is no disgrace. And there is always next season.... Anyway you will probably get to see United live on TV soon as their pre-season tour is in North America next month, including a rematch against Barcelona in Washington. They are also playing in Boston, Seattle, Chicago and New Jersey.

Kind of reminds me of something I saw years ago in the category of mad, grandiose races. When in college I ran the Paris Marathon for charity. While at the race promotional flyers were being handed out for the Marathon des Sables in Morocco. The event still runs. It's a "6 day / 151 mile (243km) endurance race across the Sahara Desert", run in sections of 25, 34, 38, 82, 42, and 22 km and equivalent to about 5 and a half full marathons; individual competitors, not a team. "In addition to that, competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint." And you have to cook your own food along the way. "You will experience mid-day temperatures of up to 120°F, of running or walking on uneven rocky, stony ground as well as 15 - 20% of the distance being in sand dunes." I retrieved this info from the current website, but that flyer made quite an impression on me (without seriously tempting me). Apparently they get about 700 entrants. "the winner in 2008 (a Moroccan) completed the race in 19 hours and 28 minutes - that's 12.6 km per hour"
It sounds rather literally "awesome as hell". One of those things best admired from a distance.
hey doofy - we have a friend running in the race. he's an interesting guy and i would expect "his team" to fair well. we were at dinner and the topic came up of his team needing an "alternate". being full of n00b i kept my trap shut. but i would someday consider this kind of event.
Thanks to Doofy's tip and my irrepressible sense of self-flagellation I brought it up at work and now have 5 co-workers who are long distances runners very interested in running the New England race next year. On paper, I _think_ I can do it. :-S
elwood, I just saw your message about the relay. I will have to tell my gonzo relay pal, he will be so pleased. To give you an idea of his mad dedication to this thing, his current project is designing trading cards featuring photos and stats of all team members, past and present...
