January 2012 Downloads

edited February 2012 in General
I assume that most are like me and added substantially less in January than December, but still some good tunes are now in the collection.

mTraks

Grimes and d'Eon - Darkbloom: Split EP of dream pop/R&B.
Jimmy Cliff - Sacred Fire: New EP with some great covers.
Matthew Dear - Headcage: EP to tide us over to the next LP.
MC5 - Thunder Express: Debut live LP.
V/A - Lagos All Routes: Honest Jon's rerelease of Nigerian highlife/funk.
V/A - Lagos Shake: A Tony Allen Chop Up: Also Honest Jon's, this one is remixes of Tony Allen tunes.

Amazon

Neon Indian - Era Extrana: Good $3.99 deal.

CD at Show

V/A - Local Current Vol. 2: Compilation of in studio performances by local artists with the proceeds being split between supporting MPR and going to the artists. It's excellent and available now at the usual suspects (including mTraks surprisingly).

Well, in my case I think you assume wrongly; I went a little overboard. In my defense, my Christmas gifts included gift cards that got spent on music, emusic was throwing free credit at me that I had to spend, some labels gave me review copies of things to review for MiG, SEM Label and Rafael Anton Irisarri had 50% off sales on Bandcamp, and I realized that with one 75 track month at MTraks and a little cherry picking on some albums (e.g. I strongly dislike the tracks on Gurun Gurun that have Rurakiss on vocals, so I skipped those and got the rest) I could totally clear out my MTraks SFL (haven't even unzipped all of those yet - it was just more economical to buy them all at once and save them for later).

    Emusic
Richard Knox and Frederic D. Oberland - The Rustle of the Stars
Sebastian Plano - The Arrhythmical Parts of Heart
Lutz Glandien - The 5th elephant
The Boats - Ballads of the Research Department
    Emeralds - Emeralds
    Emeralds - Solar Bridge

    MTraks
    Wil Bolton - Time Lapse

  • Now I am really tempted by that jazz set. Amazon here have it at a very simialr price (£32) with a second set for £29. Even though I have several of the CDs it must be worth it!

  • @BT, that reminds me, I got the Bach 100 as well. But it's still in the cloud somewhere so I don't know if it counts as a download yet.
  • @greg, totally worth it. I only had two of them already (David & Brubeck), and decided this was my best way to start learning the landscape (and also maybe figuring out which kinds of jazz I'd like to pursue more specifically). Haven't liked everything (we talked about the Jaco Pastorius CD), but I have so far liked most of it. I'm not trying to listen through it all at once, I'd rather get to know them one or two at a time.
  • Yes GP I think it will be worth me getting - much of my jazz collection is recently recorded, generally recommended by Jonah or through Guardian reviews. My jazz back story is limited to a handfual of key artists. From memory I had four from the boxed set, so well worth the money.
  • From eMusic:
The Wind Horse - Anda Union (Mongolian folk)
Kinshasa Succursale - Baloji (DR COngo hip-hop/African)
Shrimp Boots and Vintage Suits - Creole String Beans (Lousiana swamp pop)
