So Sunday is the 100th anniversary of the fateful sinking of the Titanic. Just listened to a 4-minute presentation on NPR Music, "Remembering The Titanic's Intrepid Bandleader," which is very, very good. Listen here.

Of course, then I had to re-visit David Olney's song "Titanic," written from the iceberg's perspective. A most unusual and powerful composition (with some great guitar playing from Sergio Webb).

  • This link fits well. Basically, many people don't realize that the Titanic actually happened, not just in a movie.
  • !!!!! Are you kidding? I cannot believe so many people think it was just a movie.

I'm not surprised: most people's notions of reality are shaped by philosophy, political discourse, and novels, not history (that is to say, what really happens). It's particularly true when discussing religion (both with believers and atheists).
  • No chance of avoiding the fact that it was a real ship over here. We've had a mega surfeit of programmes over recent weeks, plus daily news reports from both 24hour news channels following the fateful voyage in real time. I, for one, am glad the anniversary is now over for another 100 years!!

i'll belatedly mention that gavin bryars' the sinking of the titanic is a brilliant long piece, especially the most recent version (with philip jeck and alter ego).

if you haven't heard it, you should. perfect listening on a long walk on a windy night.
