Unsung Guitarists

edited April 2012 in General
Just wanted to post this offering from Fender.com of 10 Unsung Guitarists for anyone interested. There's a couple I don't know I intend to check out, and I don't know that I'd call Bill Frisell unsung - maybe a little chameleonic for some people, but some of these guys I follow are definitely flying under the general radar - Doyle Bramhall II, Jim Campilongo, and Greg Koch I really like, and besides being a singer/songwriter I didn't realize until fairly recently that Buddy Miller was such a badass on gittar.

Yeah, Frisell's an odd choice there - certainly he seems to me the most famous by far of the guitarists in that piece. My nom for "un(der)sung guitarist" is Glenn Phillips (youtube).

    - Two nominations from me for unsong guitarists, at least in my part of the world. I would probably never had heard of them if it wasn't for the NWCRI catalogue from Amie street:

  • A fascinating list. Besides Frisell I also know Michael Landau, but not much beyond that. I'll add Snowy White who really is in the same category as Michael Landau as a session musician. I'll maybe follow up some of the names.

Well, I first noticed Michael Landau on Jennifer Warnes terrific album Famous Blue Raincoat (an album full of great guitar players including Doyle Bramhall II as part of Stevie Ray Vaughan's band) and found he showed up on a good number of albums in the vinyl collection. My early cd collection included the Arc Angels '92 release and a couple of years ago I picked up Living In A Dream at Emusic (a great bonus album, cd 1- alternate versions of the '92 release & cd 2 - 4 more tracks). My first introduction to Bill Frisell was through Marianne Faithfull. I don't have a lot in the library, the Stay Awake Soundtrack, Deep Dead Blue with Elvis Costello and as part of The Hole Dozen on a Mickey Newbury tribute album. I found Buddy Miller during the Public Library years '91 - '98 along with Gurf Morlix, Jim Lauderdale, Steve Young and those sorts of folks. Apparently I met Alex Scully in Beach House, but I can't recall, so perfect time for another run through the rotation. I'm not familiar with the others but I believe I'll pick up some of that Tyler Bryant and Orange.

At any rate. I'll toss out a bone for one of my favourite guitarists Jody Harris. A big thanks to James White for that. Raybeats Youtube

Ps. Jody Harris' album It Happened One Night is on the bottom shelf right next to Jules and the Polar Bears
