Daytrotter ? Daytrotter !!!

Daytrotter no longer appeals to me and I am no longer a proponent of their service.

They now charge $32/year (it used to be $24 and, truth be told, $32 is still reasonable). However, they are totally inflexible regarding their annual automatic account renewal policy (reminiscent of emusic).

A couple months ago I noticed that they no longer provide a downloader and you instead have to manually download and unzip any sessions that you are interested in keeping locally. Once downloaded the sessions are not unzipped in any usable structure - instead of unzipping to a folder structure like their old downloader used to do (ie: "<artist>/<session date>") they unzipped into a folder like "artist-21021131-37385674" which causes quite a bit of folder manipulation on my part after unzipping the goods. I emailed them about this they mystifyingly said something like - "Wow, didn't realize that... that a pretty good suggestion we might look into changing that to make it more usable for our end users". And after 8 months nothing has changed.

Also, I just noticed that in the last month or two that they way they tag their new sessions that are added to their site so that they show up in sight searches no longer includes the date when the session was made available on the site but instead the day of the session apparently which could be the current month, the previous month, the month before that or simply a repeat of a previously released session from a couple years ago. I had gotten into the habit of visiting only once a month and doing a search for all the sessions for the previous month and then downloading what I wanted from that... now I have to track/monitor sessions as they are added on a weekly basis since there is no longer any way to search by when sessions were made available.

It's generally become more of an exercise in frustration than anything else. I would dissuade anyone from joining and giving them any of your hard earned monies. If you do, though, best of luck.

  • I've listened to Daytrotter sessions for years. It's a great site. Believe it or not, they only became a pay site a few months ago (I think they used to sell FLAC copies of the sessions, but the mp3s were always free). I haven't signed up yet because I haven't had the time, but now that they have an Android app it may be worth it. I'm glad to see they're still going strong.
  • I've downloaded from Daytrotter for awhile too. Great way to get a fix of an artist you're into or to check out some you don't know. I didn't realize they started charging, but $2/month isn't bad.
  • I subscribe, very well spent $2 even if I only listen to a couple a month.
