twin stepchildren: albums that do near wear out

  • @thom Suba's album is fantastic, one of my favorites, and his production work with Bebel Gilberto was top notch it is truly a shame that he died right at the start of his career.
  • @thom: i'd be all fine with sinead o'connor in "this category" - but sarah really sounds exactly like karla. i'm not sure if karla predates you too much to know either way, but give "the water is wide" a listen and you tell me...
  • @elwoodicious - That was a tragic loss. I've listened to Sao Paolo Confessions so many times, and it always bothers me that I'll never hear a follow-up. The music community down there really seemed to have embraced him.

@brittleblood - What's so funny is that a friend of mine used to always say that Sarah was a poor man's Sinead. I'll have to check out Karla.
  • Never heard of karla. And given that you guys are kids, she wouldn't predate me. Tell me more.

And I will be getting a hard copy of Fumbling. I do like her voice. A lot.
  • Karla Bonoff! There's a name (and a voice) I haven't heard for a looooooong time.
I used to have an album of hers.
A friend borrowed it for about 5 years!
Even back then I had too much music :-)
  • This will be my last word on Sarah, I promise, but there is a video/DVD release, the name might also be Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, not 100% on that, a live show from that era, and in the studio cuts like the Tom Waits cover from the Freedom Sessions, Old '55, that is really good.
  • The Mountain Goats---Tallahassee
    The Beatles-------------Rubber Soul
The Rolling Stones-----Let it Bleed and Beggars Banquet
    Bob Dylan---------------Blood on the Tracks
Iron and Wine / Calexico----In the Reins
Sun Kil Moon------------Ghosts of the Great Highway
  • @thom: you see! it's like we're old friends.

karla was a lesser known folkie - prolly in the shadow of the jackson browne era - shich was subsequently buried by springsteen and the crush of punk intruding on the party.

the only reason i bring this up is that i have that same damn annoying audio recognition problem that K relishes - it is damn near impossible to distinguish their voices.

o...now i'm gonna have to look up the actor who plays lucius malfoy in those harry potter movies - he is damn near impossible to discern v. jeremy northam. they both can hit a shrill like no other...well, except each other...but NO OTHER!!!

Never mind. I get him confused with Julian Sands.

Lucius Malfoy = Jason Isaacs, who was also the bad guy in Mel Gibson's overly-patriotic "The Patriot". When I saw the first HP movie I thought it was Timothy Dalton (1980's James Bond) in a blown-out wig. The connection between the two is that Isaacs played a James Bond-ish character in the Jackie Chan movie "The Tuxedo".

I don't see the Jeremy Northam thing tho. Isaacs always seems to look badass and Northam strikes me as somewhat twee.
  • it's their voice...i've only seen northam in "enigma" (about the enigma code) - and i kept hearing a familiar voice - malfoy came to me.
  • Beatles - Rubber Soul - already mentioned
  • The Sarah McLachlan CD (Legacy Edition, Fumbling Towards Ecstacy and The Freedom Sessions + a DVD) arrived two days ago, but I haven't had a chance to listen because I have been on the run. We are leaving shortly for Lexington, and spouse doesn't care for music these days (he certainly did in his 20s and early 30s - don't know what happened), so I don't play it in the car when he is along. I'm looking forward to listening.

Damn, that Legacy edition is a steal - I had to make 3 separate purchases back in the day. Super well worth it though.

Artists that don't wear out - Richard Thompson. Who's an RT super freak? I'm specifically looking towards info on the new box set, and how necessary is it to those who have a lot of RT already. My impression thus far is that it doesn't contain a whole lot that isn't already out there ( or, more to the point, already on the shelf).
  • tim is an RT freak.

that said, i've enjoyed everything i've heard of his i just haven't pulled the trigger on a full-blown exploration.
  • swerving a little off the current course, "Hand Of Kindness" by RT definitely gets my nod as an album that will never wear out.
  • too much coffee and "Funhouse" by the Stooges at 6:00 am on a Saturday morning
