hey mutantis, eythian, mutex, zg

edited August 2009 in General
each of you managed to build some tools around "a service" - in mutex' case - more around gsg's board than emu. but why? all of it created a life of goodwill within our community and let me be the first to thank you...but what does it all mean when "the service" turns out to be sony?

  • Why:
    A. We like cool toys.
    B. We know how to make our own.

What does it mean when Pwny...
A lot of the stuff we were doing on Mixtaper wasn't specific to eMusic. Anyway, it's a moot point since gsg pulled the plug. Also, credit for the coding goes to gsg. I was mainly supplying ideas & sometimes explaining how they could be implemented.
  • Yeah, pretty much what Mutex said. I needed something better than what was available, was able to create it, and creating things is fun. It's really just a side effect that it's useful to others too :)

It doesn't really bother me what it's used for. Indeed, that's why it's open source: I want to encourage people to use it for their own ends.

That said, I could put something into eMusic/J that noticed if it was a Sony track and added a frowny face to it ;)
  • Dr. Mutex, eythian,

I have never thanked either of you for your work. Thanks very much.
Finding new releases is so easy thanks to you.
Downloading them is effortless and so reliable.

    Thanks again
  • I started the new releases thing when I realized that they were adding new albums with dates tagged on them that were several days or a couple of weeks old. Like the albums were getting tagged with the date they were uploaded, but that wasn't necessarily the date that they showed up on the new arrivals list. This meant that you couldn't find them, because they were buried several pages down. In addition, only showing 15 releases per page was stupid in my mind.

So, I decided to grab all the albums each day and create my own database. And then I decided to share it. And then people requested features.

As far as the Sony deal goes, I was more angry about the way they handled things, and about the way they raised my prices by 250%, even though I was promised low prices, than the Sony deal itself. And because of that, I stopped posting the new releases on their message board. Maybe it's petty, but it felt to me like what I needed to do.
  • I want to add my thanks as well to all concerned. Ethyian: I never used your downloader because for some odd reason I never had any problems with eMu's and I usually lean towards the "if it ain't broke..." side of things, but I thank you anyway because it's people like you that helped to make eMusic such a rich and rewarding community.

And Mutantis, I swear to god without your listings I would have given up on that damned site ages ago. There are so many many new arrivals that I would have otherwise missed if I had to rely solely on my own browsing efforts. The frustration alone would have done me in. I can't thank you enough either, and I am really glad that you are still willing to keep up the listings here at eMusers. And I understand totally why you stopped posting them at eMusic - I would have done the same. In my mind, abandonment is a fair price in exchange for betrayal. At least, that's how I see it.

I can forgive eMusic for almost everything they did because at the end of the day they are nothing more than a profit driven business and can only be expected to behave as such. And as much as any of us hate the new direction they've taken, we can only accept that they did what they felt was needed for their business to survive. But the way in which they made their changes was uncalled for, unnecessary and totally lacking in any form of respect or consideration. But even that doesn't bother me so much when all is said and done because that form of stupidity seems more the rule than the exception in the business world. However, there is one thing they did which goes beyond everything else and which I will never forgive or forget: they lied to me. Without shame and without regard, they lied to me.

I don't take that from anyone.
