Word of the Day

Katagelasticism: the joy of laughing at others.

Comments

  • Well, I would suspect we all have experienced that joy, even if we didn't know what it was called. Or how to pronounce it.
  • I like that - 'laughing down on someone'. Any different from Schadenfreude, though? (We anglophones have to use a foreign word for an unpleasant concept., i seems)
  • Sadly I think I engage in katagelasticism far too often.

  • Do I have to login to get the word of the day?
  • "My first dictionary" reminds me of a joke...

Teacher asks the class, "Can anyone give me a sentence using the word contagious?"
Kid raises hand and says, "We had a plumber in to fix our washing machine, and it took the contagious".
  • Nereffid, I have repeated the sentence out loud several times. I just don't get it.

Is there a point to this? Or is like that old one:
    Repeat after me.
    O
    (Repeat)
    Owa
    (Repeat)
    Owata
    (Repeat)
    owatagu
    (Repeat)
    owatagusigh
    (Repeat)
    owatagusigham
    (Repeat)

Or maybe it allows you to experience katagelasticism?

I need to check on how to pronounce this word.
  • Explaining a joke is always a disaster...

    "it took the c**t ages"
  • Maybe disaster to you, but now that I get it, it's funny. I'm actually laughing -- at the joke and at my own denseness.
  • @ Nereffid

Another day, another word. What you got in the bag?
  • I told a girl that my prospects were good
And she said baby, it's understood

The word of the day is 'prospects'

as you prolly already know, early devil has a wonderful voice.

chit-chattin' about with him i kicked around the idea of him "narrating" as audio books are all the rage. he was a bit interested so i thought i'd go thru some mechanics with him >

68: are there any words you just won't say?
early: no, i think i'm good.
    68: ok...how 'bout "turgid"
    early: oh...

this went on for another 4 or 5 words before he swore off narrating.

by the by, early + his wife comprise cedarstwo - and they offer at no charge a pretty decent offering of material they've recorded. great stuff - i'll ask if he would want it linked here.
