Classical music on Amie Street

edited November 2009 in Classical
It's literally pouring in with classical music these days...

Some examples:
Werner Josten: Jungle by Polish National Radio Orchestra
David Lang: Are You Experienced? by Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne

- And some organ works from the Syrius label:
Johann Sebastian Bach (aux Grandes Orgues de la Basilique du Couvent Royal de Saint-Maximin) by Pierre Bardon
Bossi & Manari by Domenico Severin

Most of them are free in about 5 - 15 minutes, and then goes up to 15 - 20 c. per track.
(the Josten was free when I started writing, now its 1,19)
New on Amie link.

Comments

  • I've been picking up quite a few of them myself, some for free others for around a buck an album.

I've listened to 3 or 4 of them fairly extensively throughout the day. One I would highly recommend, even though it's not free is Where the Wild Things Are.

    >Just in: Michael Gordon: Big Noise from Nicaragua - Still free.

You and I must be simul-downloading these....and competing for the rec's as well I see!

For anyone interested 20th century classical / avant garde, check out the label Anthology of Recorded Music.

Well yes, I'm gonna dl. later, though.
    - Thanks for your informative rec's - Oooops, another one just dropped in
  • >Thanks for your informative rec's

It's just smoke and mirrors. I have been cribbing the info from DRAM or Wikipedia. I have a long queue of things to download today as well!
  • Why are you rec'ing New World? Granted this is helpful to fellow listeners, New World has a poor record, in general, at Amie, not often moving much after no longer being free. Moreover, they pulled their catalog earlier this year, effectively making it impossible for recs to accrue any value.

I'm nearly maxed out for the morning. Hopefully the drop will continue throughout the weekend. I suspect that most of these albums will stay about 15-20 cents per track. I'm surprised that these have not been entirely easy to get for free. Perhaps the NW drop has been fortuitously timed to the introduction of album pricing for Bis at eMu.
  • I grabbed the Michael Gordon for 92 cents. I'm pretty ignorant of classical and the new drops, but thanks to Plong42's DRAM link, I see that Michael Gordon is a member of Bang On A Can who I know and like. Also an album title like "Big Noise from Nicaragua" grabs my attention more than most.
  • Here's an added bonus. The label puts the liner notes online in pdf form.

    Just use this search page

(there's also a page for all the liner notes, but it actually more more to find them there than it is to do a quick search)
  • >Why are you rec'ing New World?

Probably because I am ignorant of the history you just described. I also have a huge pile of recs I am not suing for anything. Most are around 20 cents right now, which is better than alot of the stuff I have rec'ed lately.

I have managed to grab tons of music today for free, most of which was new to me.
  • I was in the same situation where I had around 500 recs. The strategy I started using was to buy the popular albums I wanted, which were around 20-30 a track when I found them, and REC enough tracks to make my money back on that album. RECing something at 25 cents that goes up to 90+ cents is a better return than going from 0 to 20.
  • If Amie were better known as a venue for classical music, the recs might be worth more. And if classical fans were less finicky, they might enjoy what Amie offers.
  • Leroy Jenkins - Themes and Improvisations on the Blues - Jenkins, Threadgill, and others with the String Quartet.

    Still under $1

    Wonderfull earcandy for art bears:
    Jack Vees: Surf Music Again
"Jack Vees was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1955. His early musical training was in piano and tuba, but he soon switched to the electric bass guitar. He attended Glassboro State College and went on to receive his M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts, where he studied music composition with Morton Subotnick, Stephen Mosko, Louis Andriessen, Vinko Globokar, and Bernard Rands.

Vees's works have been performed throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe by numerous ensembles and soloists for whom he has written, including Ensemble Modern, the California Ear Unit, Zeitgeist, Hemispheres, Jeffrey Krieger (electric cello), and Amy Knoles (electronic percussion). He performs his music with his own ensemble Chez Vees, which consists of electric oboe, percussion, computer/midi electronics, and Vees on bass and electric guitars. His mastery of extended techniques on the bass led him to write the Book on Bass Harmonics (Alfred Music Publishers, 1981) which has become a standard reference on the subject. Vees is currently operations director and instructor of electronic music at Yale University's Center for Studies in Music Technology.

Major performances of Vees's works include New Music America, Neue Musik New York/Cologne, Bang On A Can, and Soundings. He has been commissioned by Ensemble Modern, Music In Motion (with the California Ear Unit), the Minnesota Composers Forum, Zeitgeist, and Corn Palace Productions among others, and has been in residence at Duke University (with Chez Vees) and the Yellow Springs Institute (with oboist Libby Van Cleve and composer Eleanor Hovda). Vees has also participated in numerous collaborations with choreographers and video artists."

John Cage Piano Music went up this morning, less that 30 cents still.
  • It looks like we're more or less competing with each other for the freebies - about 90% of the recent listeners are people here or from the other place.

    It's actually kinda humorous
  • I do not listen to the samples, I'd rather dload them and listen later. With this classical dump in progress, I am probably going to be happy with whatever I get for free or cheap, so I skip the samples.

But I did notice that the usual suspects are lurking over their F5 button today. Alas, I must now go and teach a class, so there is money in the back for the next 50% off sale.
