amazon mp3 question

edited February 2010 in General
been waiting for emusic to bring this over from CD Baby Jimmy Agren but it never happened.

interesting blues guitar in a style somewhere between and beyond Ry Cooder and Zoot Horn Rollo.

my question:
are their any restrictions on amazon Mp3s?
i'm always a little apprehensive when i'm required to download a downloader to download.

  • None that I'm aware of. I've been using them since they launched with nary an issue and I believe that you can re-download tracks from your collection but I have not actually tried it.
  • Amazon mp3's are DRM-free, no restrictions on using/copying them. No prob with the Amazon downloader...it is very light and quick, in fact much faster than the eMu DL Manager.

    You cannot re-DL Amazon mp3's.
  • @Doofy, I thought that you could because the "Your Media Library" shows a download button next to each of my purchases, but that said I have not clicked the button for the niggling doubt that they will ding my credit card again. Trust is one of my "issues". ;-)
  • Oh, never noticed "Your Media Library" before. However, mine does not show a download button...in fact it says "already downloaded" next to mp3 purchases. (Including recent free albums and songs) Are you sure you completed those DLs? If so, I think you are probably wise to be wary of that button, Amazon has got that "one-click" thing going on. Dangerous.

My media library goes all the way back to 1997, including picture books I bought for my daughter when she was 4!
  • Try downloading a free sampler to test out the Amazon downloader.
  • If it's free it wouldn't necessarily answer the question, though, because with "one-click" downloading it could just be a new download rather than a redownload without a way to tell the difference.

  • I have download hundreds of MP3's from Amazon, with virtually no problems. I think that everything I have dloaded as been int he category "cheap or free," but I have no complaints about the download program or their customer service.
  • It's a one download thing. I have twice had one or two tracks on purchased albums that didn't make it through. Both times I contacted CS, and they reset for me. CS was fast, courteous, and helpful. On one of the problems, it didn't work twice, but I think I probably clicked the wrong thing on my firewall. They suggested I uninstall the downloader and download one track at a time through my browser, which worked. I think my second problem was related to a dropped connection, as I have used their downloader many, many times with no problem. The only way you can purchase is through the downloader, I think.

Amazon installs its own folder. Mine is in the My Music folder. All the Amazon downloads are automatically directed to their folder.
  • thanks to all.

    downloaded without issue.

Agren is some smokin', angular blues for those interested in such things.

i think i spotted "memphis sessions" by James Blood Ulmer for 5 dollars while i was there...
  • I had another great experience with Amazon Customer service today. I got a $5 gift code in the email, so redeemed it and I bought a $6.99 mp3 Album. When the invoice came through my email, the credit did not appear. It was gone from my account, but I got no credit. I sent a message to CS and in less than ten minutes they credited me the full amount, $6.99. (well, I guess I wait two or three days for the credit to go through, but that is not their fault).

Meanwhile, I have an AmieStreet CD problem that has gone several days with nothing more than the auto response.
  • Have to agree that Amazon Customer Service does a great job. On the rare occasion I've had to contact them they were right on it. Their Downloader has never once malfunctioned on me and it is fast. And, y'know, now that I'm out of crack cards finally, their sale items are either lower or almost the same as 12 credits at eMu, so I'm paying a little closer attention.
  • Wrong thread I guess, but Amie will totally blow you off sometimes, esp for probs on "free" albums. Mutter mutter sputter...
  • I concur on Amazon. They run some good $5 specials quite a bit of the time, and I have never had an issue with a download or with the quality of the track. eMu should be looking closely at how Amazon runs their business. Granted, their margins are probably a bit higher since their normal pricing is more toward the iTunes end of the spectrum.
  • And in case you haven't noticed, their $5 album special includes 1000 titles this month. I remember when it used to be 5 every weekend. Then they started doing 50/month. Then 100/month. Every so often they do these huge sales. Plus a lot of their mp3 albums are priced under 7 bucks to begin with.
