dear brighter (and xtrev)
@brighter: i called up a buddy who works in the same building...we met in the lobby + he asked "where you wanna go for lunch?" - i said "let's go x out the daley center - they had asian-american fest last week, might have something new."
walking over there we ran right into the mayor of the city - shook hands with him and continued on...got to the daley center and voila! turkish festival!!! food was terrible, but that's ok...the performance on the stage was just mind-bending great! one guy in particular did the whirling dervish so well/hypnotically that we stayed glued (as glued as you can be in a beer garden) way too long. in any event, the music that served as background just nailed the stage performance. RECs please!!!
@xtrev: can we get a "whirling dervish" category???

When it comes to Traditional Turkish music, I'm pretty much emty.
a "whirling dervish" category???
- Hmmm, don't know about that.
This search points to some possible whirling dervish music of interest, though I've heard none of those releases.
tripped across this while whirling - as variety packs go, this goes!!!
omar faruk tekbelik seems well represented.

Unless Turkey win Eurovision this weekend (which nobody really cares about), in which case you can't, because Turkey is famously Not In Europe despite all their efforts over the years to be IN EUROPE.
It amuses us.

Sadly yes.
Personally I'd be in favour of a great big United States of Europe (well, maybe just the good bits), but I seem to be in a minority.
sufi music ensemble - Thanks for the rec on this, thoroughly enjoying it.
In a similar genre (based on Last.FM), I also grabbed Debu - Drunk with Love and Ahura - Fire and Light (36 cents for an hour of music, a bit more new-agey relaxation than Sufi Music Ensemble or Debu)
Pasted from the site: NEY MUSIC OF DERVISH/SUFI WHIRLING (Semaa/sem
Hi Chas,
Thanks for the recommendation, although I can only find MP3 downloads, not CDs for The Sufi Music Ensemble. So, I decided to buy the following: "The Rough Guide to Sufi Music" (various artists) and 2 CDs from Arc Music/Naxos: "Sufi Music from India" (various artists) and "Music of the Whirling Dervishes" by The Gulizar Turkish Music Ensemble. Let me know if you want holds on any of these.
so i responded "yes!!!" + will let you know quality on arrival.
if you have the chance, track down a copy of the rough guide to the music of india > Rajasthani Folk Song by Sultan Khan And Zakir Hussain (2002 release) is 8 minutes with meaning.
by the by, folks - chum up with whoever does the acquiring at your local library - it is incredibly cool to see less elton john and more rough guide material in the "recently added" section. (not slighting the UK in the least over expulsion of elton john. well, mebbe...)
