Sun Ra Recs?

edited July 2010 in Jazz
I have 5 dls left this month and want to use it on something completely left field for me. I think I've decided that it should be Sun Ra. Obviously he has quite the discography, and while I'm thinking about going with Other Planes of There I thought I'd check first to see if I'm missing anything vital.

So jazz/avant garde folks, good choice? Or should I go with something else?

  • 5 dls?

I would start with Lanquidity. It's a good intro for someone coming from a rock/pop/alt background.

I'd also recommend Jazz in Silhouette, but that has 8 tracks - Track #1 is absolutely haunting.
  • There's a totally brilliant 60 min. film at Ubuweb film:
Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise (1980)

    - And some pretty out there stuff at Ubuweb sound:
    John Cage meets Sun Ra
  • Good call by Froggie, plus it's 5 credits (I think). I always enjoy this one when it comes up. There's so much Sun Ra on eMusic it's insane. I don't know if there's any other jazz artist who recorded so much, or in so many different settings.

Here's another free-jazz 5-spot I just added to my S4L, since the death of Fred Anderson: From the River to the Ocean
  • Thanks guys. I had thought about Lanquidity too, but had shied away a bit because it appears to be a bit of an outlier in his catalog (style wise). Probably is a better jumping off point for me though.

I'll have to take a look at the Ubuweb stuff tonight, BN. Thanks!

I made a Gimme 10 Tracks - Sun Ra list a while back at emu, explicitly created for introductory purposes. A later thread popped up more recently.
  • Thanks kargatron. I'll check it out. This time I am going with Lanquidity though.
