Society of Sound Review

edited August 2010 in General
I've had this service now for half a year. I can't quite remember the details, but I believe I paid sixty shackles to join for a year. You got to dig world music to enjoy the service, but you get to download a live London Symphony Orchestra CD and a Real World Music CD each month in 16 bit FLAC, 24 bit FLAC, or Apple Lossless. The curator is Peter Gabriel - Real World has been his side project for years. It was especially active almost two decades ago and the whole back catalog is now on eMu if you like that stuff. The idea was simple: find amazing artists around the world and record their music with the best equipment available. The biggest musical success from the effort was Afro Celt Sound System, Joseph Arthur, and of course Peter Gabriel. The best CD so far I'd have to say is Peter Gabriel's cover album with LSO. But so far, I'd say I've really dug some of the outcomes. I don't get too far into classical, so that side doens't interest me much, though now and then I like it. Some of the previous releases are available to download. At half a year, I've gotten twenty four albums from them, though I've really only enjoyed half of them.

Musically, the problem with the effort is what happened between Thelonious Monk and Larry Carlton. Be bop to smooth jazz. Sometimes it takes the grace of another country's traditional music and makes it cliche, smooth sounding, and quite frankly, the thrill is gone. But some great music from Aurelio Martinez, Afro Celt Sound System, Toumast, Dengue Fever, and Waldmar Bastos.

The music itself I consider long term. Not an amazing five star service because the style and goods are so selective, but still worthwhile and fun to receive that monthly email. They also will have one or two bonus CDs a month.

  • I'll have to look at this again. I had a trial when they first got started and never found anything worth ponying up the $60, but now that they have something of a catalog building it seems like a better value proposition.
  • I bought the CD of Peter Gabriel's covers for my wife. I haven't listened to all of it, but really like what I've heard. Kind of curious to try this out - especially since they do FLAC.
