October 2010 Downloads

edited November 2010 in General
What with no Amie Street and no Great Guvera Giveaway this month, it was light. The whole list for October is:

CocoRosie - La Maison De Mon Reve - I know this band is pretty divisive, but I absolutely love their stuff. I prefer Grey Oceans to this one, but still quite enjoyable.
The Dresden Dolls - s/t: I've said it before and I'll say it again: I have such a crush on Amanda Palmer.
Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out: Somehow I've gotten to this stage in my life without really ever having heard any Sleater-Kinney. It's good, but not high on my list to get more.
Superchunk - No Pocky for Kitty (Remastered): Another album I can't believe I didn't already have.
Diego Garcia - You Were Never There: Little two song EP recommended to me by Katrina. Nice 60s sounding pop with latin guitar flourishes. I enjoy it.

That's all for this month. Next month will be a lot more though, as I use my free eMu month and get started at the Limewire Store.

  • Re: Amanda Palmer:
This is indeed a strange coincidence,
The Edward Ka-Spel lyrics I posted a couple of hours ago at Katrina's thread was copied from Amanda Palmers blog from a post that is only 2 days old, where she just goes on and on about her love affair with The Legendary Pink Dots in the most colourful language. Link
    - I've never been into The Dresden Dolls, now I just have to.
  • @Carig: Your son doesn't count as a download?

  • Thanks for the link BN! I'll have to check it out.

BT - I suppose the boy should count as a download as I have listened to him quite a bit in the last week and half.

I also grabbed the Makounichi Bento, but forgot to list it earlier. It's quite good.

  • This includes September and October, and includes a couple of boosters:
Hallelujahland - American Graveyard - new honky tonk country rock. I get the Americana charts every week and this was a new addition last week, plus it has a Parental Advisory sticker so I knew it must be up my alley
    Stone Crazy - Buddy Guy
Disciples of the Truth - Burrito Deluxe
    Layfayette Marquis - CC Adcock
Que Paso - Chris Altmann - Australian guy, saw his name cos he's opening for Joe Pug in a few weeks. 70s west coast country rock done very credibly.
    Paupers Field - Dylan LeBlanc
Water -- Gregory Porter - really nice jazz vocals. Thanks, JackedUpJazz!
New Orleans Piano Wizard - James Booker -- omg so good. A bit obsessed with James Booker right now.
Hazel and Alice - Hazel Dickens
Scumbag Country - Hellbound Glory -- more new honky tonk
    Ancestor's Call - Huun-Huur-Tu
Nation of Heat EP - Joe Pug
Harlem River Blues - Justin Townes Earle
Vintage Vinos - Keith Richards compilation of his solo stuff, happy to see it on eMu and even happier I could get it in my region. Love it.
Lucky Peterson - You Can Always Turn Around
Mance Lipscomb - Songster, Vol 1
    Stax Essentials - Rance Allen
    The Knuckleball Suite-Peter Mulvey
Live in Amsterdam - Tony Joe White
Tommy McLain - The Essential Collection
Next Stop ... Soweto Volumes 1, 2 and 3 - Various -- figured that this type of boutique crate digging thing might be priced high under the coming regime so got some boosters and pulled the trigger on a bunch in my SFL
Voices of Americana - Warren Storm- swamp pop legend, saw him last month with Lil Band of Gold. 70 and going strong.
Panama! Volume 3 - Various Artists
The Round Guide to the Music of Russian Gypsies -- Various Artists -- pretty great stuff, gotta check out some of the other Rough Guide Tos too
Soundway Presents Palenque Palenque - Various Artists
Whitey Morgan and the 78s - Whitey Morgan and the 78s - and yet more new honky tonk.

Live, from the merch stand at the gig:
The Promised Land - Lil Band O Gold

iTunes and Bandit FM and Amazon MP3:
Live at Texas Stadium -- Alan Jackson, George Strait, Jimmy Buffet
The Gambler - Kenny Roger (the whole album, lol I'd had a bit to drink. Curse you 1 click purchases!Well actually its not terrible for early 80s country pop but yeah, no hidden gems either or anything)
Accept No Substitute -- Delaney & Bonnie
    D&B Together -- Delaney & Bonnie
The Guitar Song - Jamey Johnson
Nature of a Sista - Queen Latifah
Saints and Sinners - Raul Malo
    Junky Star - Ryan Bingham
Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan - Various Artists
Malk - Saltwater Band -- veteran Indigenous Australian rock band, lead singer is Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu whose solo album was a bit of a "world music" hit last year (bleargh - can you believe that an Aboriginal Australian record gets nominated for Best WORLD Music record at the Australian music awards? And Malk was listed under World Music when reviewed in the Sydney Morning Herald the other week, which just goes to show the whole bankruptcy of that "world music" idea. /soapbox)

Hmm, I forgot to post my list. Seems like I started and cancelled another eMu account last month. Got more than I realized.

    Amazon:
Janis Joplin - Pearl (Remastered Edition)
    Bonobo - Black Sands
Fever Ray - Fever Ray (this really fits well with my current Matthew Dear obsession)
Les Savy Fav - Root for Ruin (Bonus Version) (good, but I probably could have passed)
