Odd meetings- when you realised muscians are people too

edited November 2010 in General
The first professional muscian I chatted with was the drummer of the The Flying Saucers,a highly rated rock and roll band back in the late seventies. That was in the Agincourt khazi. We retired to the bar and he gave me a rock n' roll history lesson.I was terribly drunk.
Les Evans, bless him, always kept on about his mate Bruce.'He likes Stanley Clarke and shaggin. He's alright' That's how I met Bruce Foxton (the Jam)He pissed on my car, snogged two starstruck lesbians and increased my pub standing by several degrees.
Ian Anderson, magazine editor, mover of the English Folk/world scene and John Boden.....two people blessed with patience and humour.
Jim Moray loved talking about the Smiths
and Niel Young never did my lyrics back (joke)

  • When I first started going to small shows around NYC I was very excited by the prospect of meeting some of the musicians after the show. Unfortunately I quickly learned that I rarely has anything interesting to say to them. Yo La Tengo was one of the first - at the Westbeth Theater. Tried to refrain from gushing to Ira and Georgia, but probably still sounded like an idiot. Then spent much of the opening act trying to remember James' name since he was only a few feet from me. The more memorable encounter was when Ira nearly ran me down on his bike speeding through the streets of 'Boken.

I tried somewhat unsuccessfully to strike up a conversation (i.e. flirt) with Britta Phillips when I found out she grew up near me. Not much interest on her part.

I'm trying to remember which band from Philly opened for Brian Joenstown Massacre. Maybe Asteroid #4? I was walking out on BJM due to Newcome being an asshole and decided to tell them they did Philly proud. They asked me where I was from, and I told 'em the 'burbs. They got excited and then discovered we went to rival high schools. Had a fun conversation, made fun of BJM, then left while Newcombe continued to whine about the Strokes.

You know, I almost forgot about Mike Doughty and Moby. Met both of them after shows (different ones) at Maxwell's. Both were very cool and awesome dudes.
