  • Thom, thanks for pointing out these last few. Paste putting LCD Soundsystem at the top of their list is a strange, if not lazy, choice.
  • seems to me this mag digs deeper than most:
    Dagger

lots of top 10s and reviews
  • Wow, four of Paste's top ten are also in mine? Crazy.

Having LCD Soundsystem #1 though is lazy at best. That album has only 3 and half good tracks and the rest is just filler.

Spin's top 125 of the last 25 years.

I'm surprised I actually have 49 of them. Including #1, which I like, but....no. Not even close.

    Craig
  • Craig, Craig, you're killing me here...I actually have 8 of those albums. They had to pick the one R.E.M. album I have? It was a special over at Amazon. They're going to take back my (G)old Fart card.
  • Nah, it's a list for the last 25 years, so you can be an old fart and still have some of them!

    Craig
  • I've got over 70 from that list. Hip-Hip always does me in - don't own much because it tends to have limited replay value for me.

I have 52 1/3 from the Spin list. (the 1/3 being the first volume of 39 love songs)

I had at one point, but sold or lost, another 25, many of those on cassette, or better yet dubbed cassette.

And I can't remember whether I owned Portishead's dummy or not.

So all told maybe 78 1/3.

But 25 years puts me at age 12, so this list is pretty square on with my music buying years. And I was a Spin junkie from maybe 90 or 91 (that first Prince cover was my first issue) 'till around 2000.

    Carolina Chocolate Drops
    Darcy James Argue's Secret Society
    Florence and the Machine

    Mavis Staples
    They Might Be Giants
    Richard Thompson
    Ali Farka Tour
  • Esperanza Spaulding
    So, so, so very good.
  • Oh, I hadn't even thought about the Grammy Jazz nominations, I think they look great. This is one of at least a couple news stories expressing "surprise" at Esperanza's nomination. I guess that's because of her youth...otherwise, it's hard to think of a new jazz artist who has created so much buzz. (Unless of course you count Norah.)
  • Go Black Keys!
  • Spin's top 40 of 2010 (It's a slide show, so I'm not copy/pasting here.)

Oh Spin. You get Titus Andronicus in the top 15? Good. You put that dreck from M.I.A. in the top 10? I need to question my love for the Titus Andronicus because clearly you have some sort of aural disability.

    Craig
  • I'll have to try going through Spin's again. It was way too slow earlier.

All right, alt/indie people, I am shopping for teen boys. Which of these good albums from the past year has the gnashiest, most monster-y guitars?
  • The Walkmen's Lisbon is a really good guitar-y album, but it's definitely a rock album, not metal.

I think maybe Kylessa sounded like something that would appeal to my inner teenage metal fan, but I haven't gotten it (yet.)
  • @Doofy, I'd recommend The Sword's Warp Riders for something Metal and Dungen's Skit I Allt for something Psychedelic.
  • Beautiful, thanks! Rock with some testosterone in it is great, doesn't have to be "metal." I may have to go with the Warp Riders, just as a special treat for my brother-in-law.
  • Fucked Up has an appealing name for said target audience, and a great big-sounding guitary punk thing going.
  • Dropped 60 bucks at the local record emporium, which made me feel very merry. I got the Sword, Dungen, and Kylesa *with* the bonus DVD y'all. Plus Sufjan for the emo nephew. :) Thanks for the assist, I may be back for more reccs...
  • The Onion A/V Club Top 25

Much to my pleasant surprise, Dessa comes in at #20. I'm not just a homer!
