The new Field Mouse debut, Hold Still Life, is this week's Album Premiere on Hype Machine:
According to Stereogum, Field Mouse "shimmers like Velocity Girl used to back in the early 90s." Born when singer-songwriter Rachel Browne (who's been playing in bands since she was 13) and guitarist Andrew Futnal met at college, Field Mouse released one of 2012's best tracks, "You Guys Are Gonna Wake Up My Mom", via 7" on Small Plates Records (the label run by tastemaker blogs I Guess I'm Floating and Yvynyl). Now, the New York band (currently a four-piece) are set to release their sophomore LP which, UK blog Sweeping the Nation says, boasts "the FM radio charge-gone-fuzz-jangle of the 2nd Pains Of Being Pure at Heart album, with a side order of woozy shoegaze guitar pedals."
Q2 Album of the Week for July 14, 2014. This audio will be available for a period of one week
- "wild Up is directed by Christopher Rountree, a young composer and conductor who has held the baton for the Brooklyn Philharmonic and San Diego Symphony. He has created a large, flexible, imaginative ensemble, the kind that seems to be magnetically pulling some of the West Coasts best musicians together. With many composers in-house (four out of the seven featured on "Feather & Stone," in fact), the ensembles repertoire is rightfully ambitious. . ."
A soundtrack is streaming that is a collaboration between Thom Yorke and Massive Attack's 3D. If either/both of those gentlemen float your boat, you can find it here at Uncut. The film is apparently about tax dodgers in the UK (wasn't that a Sex Pistols song?...but I digress).
The new Swervedriver comeback/reunion album, entitled I Wasn't Born to Lose You, is on NPR First Listen, probably for a week or so. (I rather like it personally...)
Supposedly the next classic-shoegazer record to drop will be the Slowdive reunion/comeback album, though that may take a couple of months. The new Blur album doesn't count as shoegaze for most fans these days, but that's just weeks away too, and in other news, Super Furry Animals may be doing a reunion/comeback as well, to be announced any day now supposedly. So I guess those who have declared the death of Britpop and early-90's shoegaze must now deal with some sort of Britpop/shoegaze zombie apocalypse.
