"Trumpeter Auer’s quintet gives an intriguing take on the compositions of Kind of Blue. Nothing straight-forward about the music, as the modern European sound gives a dreamy effect to familiar tunes. Delightful how the melody sometimes pokes out its head and reveals itself."
@GP - it is really Jonah you need to thank as I discovered it through BiTW
.
Kamasi Washington - The Epic. Another from Jonah, I am fairly sure this is his pick of the week. Three CDs long, about 170 minutes but only 17 tracks, so good value in the UK from emusic.

"It’s not an exaggeration when saxophonist & composer Washington uses the word “epic” as the title to his new album. Spanning almost three hours, this vet of the jazz scene (and equally experienced in other crossover genres) manages to frame a vast horizon line of influences and expressions in an amazingly concise vision. His ten piece band is augmented with both an orchestra and a choir, Washington incubates the most delicate strands of lyricism within an environment of Big Sound… allowing melodies to develop and grow and learn to sing and shout with their very own Big Sound voice. In the coming weeks, I’ll be writing more about this album with a stand-alone recommendation, but, really, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be hitting the purchase button on this album right now. The Epic will be getting plenty of year-end Best Of list buzz, and every bit of it will be deserved."
I can understand why the above album is called The Epic. It reminds me at one level of the Ben Hur film, with the basic band, supplemented with full orchestra and choir on a number of tracks. You can hear a couple of tracks at https://soundcloud.com/brainfeeder/sets/kamasi-washington-the-epic-1
Thanks GP - I had computer problems of the Trojan Horse type towards the end of last week, so was off line for a few days until it was sorted and missed that discussion. Having played two thirds, I actually decided I wanted to listen to something different. I was really liking it for the first hour plus, but then it became too epic. I will need to play it through in its entirety soon.
I just realize this is the only B.B. King I own. Usually I at least have some greatest hits collection or something. Any suggestions for a good one to pick up (collection or album)?

And I love it!
Unknown Mortal Orchestra » Multi-Love
Four Tet » Beautiful Rewind
Weirdly it appears that these mp3s never made it into my collection. I only ever listened to it on vinyl.
BORIS - At Last: Feedbacker
Burkina Electric » Paspanga
From the Cantaloupe Drip. Loving this.
