i've been grandfathered!

Griffin Rivers was welcomed by a chorus of smiles and love, this will be his song.

his grandmother has decorated his room with John Lennon baby furniture(?). it actually plays Lennon tunes.

i will do my part by introducing him to equal parts Seuss and Wodehouse backed by Ben Webster and Bill Evans, working our way into "A Love Supreme" and "Kind Of Blue." When he is ready, it will be on to "Highway 61 Revisited" and "High Tides and Green Grass." That should provide a nice baseline.....from there, who knows?

any suggestions?

  • congrats

... but he *will* surprise you.
  • That's great news! Congrats!

nd, you just can't go wrong with Bill Evans...
  • my grandfather, standing right around 6 foot, was the biggest man in the world to me.

congrats to everyone! now to think of a song to mark the event...

    clink!
  • Congratulations. Never really met either of my grandfathers, but wife still speaks of hers with great admiration.

Recent experience has taught me that reggae and folk music speaks very well to the little 'uns. Never too early to indoctrinate them with the struggles of the oppressed and the working class. Viva la revolution... right after naptime.

O good grief, I thought emusic made you some special offer to go back to the old pricing.

    Ahem. Where was my mind!

How cool! I hope to be a grandmother some day. Congrats to you!

    any suggestions?
Why, yes. Get yourself nicely arranged in a comfy recliner, put that grandbaby on your tummy, and have a hell of nap while some soft music plays in the background.
  • Welcome, Mojo III.

In a few years, you will need some books by the great children's poet Jack Prelutsky. For now, mostly spit rags.
  • Congratulations to you and the family!

Does he have a baby monitor that sings "Help!"?
  • i bet brighternow's infamous farting .mp3 would be a great insert into a diaper - it'd work like one of those musical greating cards, you open and the music plays!

there are definitely songs that you'll associate with your kids...nightswimming for my oldest when he was little. and it's so fitting now - he has taken up swimming as his sport and...he's hilarious trying to keep his towel on at all times in the locker room - you cannot see me naked... - he truly embodies that. he's such a great kid...turns 11 in a month.

youngest is hilarious and has a constant happiness/energy that draws you to him. this past winter we came across a xmas song that is so poppy and infectious we had to call it "holden's song". holden turns 8 in a month.

mia - my wife - calls big: "her sweet" and little: "her sparkle" - fits like you could never know.

it'll be interesting to see how you bond, gramps! the child's persona will have something to do with it.
  • Congrats!

Me, personally, my first child's intro to music will be Thelonious Monk, a combination of swing and off-kilter keystrokes that I hope will endow my child with a cadence to drive him through life while also thinking abstractly. But that's just me. You seem to have a good handle on the music from where I'm sitting.
    Again, congrats.

That was my first thought, too.
  • Big congratulations--he'll be swinging away soon. (BTW, my son first responded to Moanin' by Blakey).

Good grief, Blakey for a child. Why not just put Red Bull in his bottle?

Go back and listen to Moanin'. It's quite visceral.

Lol, oh I agree, Moanin' is visceral. Most of Blakey's stuff is pretty visceral. And while Moanin' may not be the rhythmic torrent of, say, "Free for All", it sure ain't some cerebral ECM snoozefest, either.
But don't get me wrong, I highly support any parent introducing Blakey to their child.
A warning, however, on Bill Evans... scientific studies have shown that infants introduced to Bill Evans have a higher occurrence of smoking tobacco pipes while rubbing their chin deep in thought.

Must you diss my beloved ECM in every thread? :P

    I did this...

I have a love/hate relationship with ECM. I tend to infuriate people over at the AAJ forum on this topic, though not nearly as bad as some others.

EDIT: And to answer your question, yes, I probably do. I think it's genetic.

    thanks to everyone

sorry, as i'm sure anyone who has paid attention knows, i have a tendency towards the asinine

thanks, sort of Dr. Seuss with an E.E. Cummings bent
Does he have a baby monitor that sings "Help!"?

yes, and "I'm Only Sleeping" when all is well.

i'm getting push back on the Coltrane and Wodehouse from the wife as it is, too many references to cigarettes and alcohol; at least Bill Evans gets us in the door. told her i better not see her rocking the baby to sleep while catching up with "Mad Men" on AMC on demand....big mistake, never under estimate the blunt force of the smiting eye.
Now i have to make a beatle ballad baby cd to go with the furniture theme

The cloth swaddled bundle had passed through many hands during his first hours; as I balanced this pristine bean nervously in my grip, I realized that the only sounds this young mind had processed thus far were those of the high pitched, repetitive, coaxing-a-reaction variety; I thumbed furiously through the catalog of melodies I had at my disposal and dammit if “In My Life” didn’t hum off my lips as naturally as the lump in my throat and the warmth in my heart.
Sure, its corny and lacks hip credential; but his lips stumbling on the first steps of a smile was real, baby.
  • Congratulations. I have searched high and low trying to come up with a song sample for one of my favorites, Grandpa's A Cat, but I think I got it off an album called Chess Rockabillies which seems to be out of print, or import only, which is crazy because it is a SLAMMING set of tunes. I got the cassette out of a bargain bin ages ago. To paraphrase, " Grandpa's a cat, he done throwed his walking cane away". If this album ever crosses your path, grab it.
  • heh, yeah i thought this would be about old eMu pricing too.
  • Congrats, gramps!

Now how about getting those lower prices for us long time members....
