i've been grandfathered!
Griffin Rivers was welcomed by a chorus of smiles and love, this will be his song.
his grandmother has decorated his room with John Lennon baby furniture(?). it actually plays Lennon tunes.
i will do my part by introducing him to equal parts Seuss and Wodehouse backed by Ben Webster and Bill Evans, working our way into "A Love Supreme" and "Kind Of Blue." When he is ready, it will be on to "Highway 61 Revisited" and "High Tides and Green Grass." That should provide a nice baseline.....from there, who knows?
any suggestions?

... but he *will* surprise you.
nd, you just can't go wrong with Bill Evans...
congrats to everyone! now to think of a song to mark the event...
clink!
Recent experience has taught me that reggae and folk music speaks very well to the little 'uns. Never too early to indoctrinate them with the struggles of the oppressed and the working class. Viva la revolution... right after naptime.
Ahem. Where was my mind!
How cool! I hope to be a grandmother some day. Congrats to you!
any suggestions?
Why, yes. Get yourself nicely arranged in a comfy recliner, put that grandbaby on your tummy, and have a hell of nap while some soft music plays in the background.
In a few years, you will need some books by the great children's poet Jack Prelutsky. For now, mostly spit rags.
Does he have a baby monitor that sings "Help!"?
there are definitely songs that you'll associate with your kids...nightswimming for my oldest when he was little. and it's so fitting now - he has taken up swimming as his sport and...he's hilarious trying to keep his towel on at all times in the locker room - you cannot see me naked... - he truly embodies that. he's such a great kid...turns 11 in a month.
youngest is hilarious and has a constant happiness/energy that draws you to him. this past winter we came across a xmas song that is so poppy and infectious we had to call it "holden's song". holden turns 8 in a month.
mia - my wife - calls big: "her sweet" and little: "her sparkle" - fits like you could never know.
it'll be interesting to see how you bond, gramps! the child's persona will have something to do with it.
Me, personally, my first child's intro to music will be Thelonious Monk, a combination of swing and off-kilter keystrokes that I hope will endow my child with a cadence to drive him through life while also thinking abstractly. But that's just me. You seem to have a good handle on the music from where I'm sitting.
Again, congrats.
That was my first thought, too.
Good grief, Blakey for a child. Why not just put Red Bull in his bottle?
But don't get me wrong, I highly support any parent introducing Blakey to their child.
A warning, however, on Bill Evans... scientific studies have shown that infants introduced to Bill Evans have a higher occurrence of smoking tobacco pipes while rubbing their chin deep in thought.
I did this...

I have a love/hate relationship with ECM. I tend to infuriate people over at the AAJ forum on this topic, though not nearly as bad as some others.
EDIT: And to answer your question, yes, I probably do. I think it's genetic.
sorry, as i'm sure anyone who has paid attention knows, i have a tendency towards the asinine
thanks, sort of Dr. Seuss with an E.E. Cummings bent
yes, and "I'm Only Sleeping" when all is well.
i'm getting push back on the Coltrane and Wodehouse from the wife as it is, too many references to cigarettes and alcohol; at least Bill Evans gets us in the door. told her i better not see her rocking the baby to sleep while catching up with "Mad Men" on AMC on demand....big mistake, never under estimate the blunt force of the smiting eye.
Now i have to make a beatle ballad baby cd to go with the furniture theme
Sure, its corny and lacks hip credential; but his lips stumbling on the first steps of a smile was real, baby.
Now how about getting those lower prices for us long time members....
