SteepleChase goes digital

edited February 2010 in Jazz
Just stumbled upon 692 releases from SteepleChase Records on Amazon.com. Some are available now, others will be in a few months according to the notes.

Do a search for "SteepleChase Jazz" to find them.

A quick scan shows titles by Chet Baker, Andrew Hill, Lee Konitz, Stanley Cowell, Tete Montoliu, Paul Bley, Kenny Drew, Niels-Henning

  • Is this a new thing? I can't find any announcement anywhere about this. Off the top of my head, I can't remember if Dexter Gordon's excellent album "The Apartment" was available as an mp3 recently or not.
  • I'd love to get more Johnny Dyanni (Song for Biko is a favorite), but OUCH!, those prices are steep.

jonahpwll -- I did a search for Steeplechase Jazz on Amazon a couple of months ago and didn't find anything under mp3s. A lot of the stuff that's up there now won't be available until later this year (as late as August) so I think this is pretty recent.

Bad Thoughts -- Yeah, I was really surprised to see many of single disc albums priced over $10.00. Steep is the word.

I did pick up Dancing on the Tables by Niels-Henning
  • Well, I passed on your message on the AAJ forum. I'm certain someone there will know if this Steeplechase thing is new or not. Either way, really good label.

Y'know, I need to go over to Lala and see if they have the Hatology stuff up there for a free listen. I'm not too much into that sound right now, but I wouldn't mind spending a long weekend listening to nothing but and maybe finding a few gems that pique my ear's interest.
  • Last time I looked, LaLa didn't have audio from Hatology. The Jazz Loft in NYC is their U.S. distributor. You can listen to samples there. They also have selected Hat titles on sale from time-to-time. The Hat catalog is very deep with lots of releases getting four stars from Penguin and/or four to five stars from Downbeat. Seems to range from bop to avant-guard to European classical/improvisational. Packaging is excellent with copious liner notes. I've just started getting into them, so far my favorite is Constellation the first release by the Tiny Bell Trio with Dave Douglas.

Aside from the Winter&Winter, based on what I've seen of your listening habits lately, the Hatology is gonna be right up your alley.

LOL - Yeah, I've been on a real "avant" and "free bop" spree lately. But these things tend to balance themselves out.
