Emil Brandqvist Orkester - "Sma Rum"
More of a large ensemble than a big band (their site lists seven members in the ensemble, but there could be other contributors), they've got a sound that fits right in with much of the big band/large ensemble albums I've been listening to. Firmly entrenched in straight-ahead big band jazz, but they take wonderful detours of cinematic composition that give, to my ears at least, a story-like feel to each song, and there's a drive to some of them that makes me wonder if this is what a Nik Bartch's Ronin big band might sound like.
Emu has it as a new release, but it came out like back in 2007 I think. At four and a half bucks, not bad.
