UMG Labels, Encoding, and casual insults
Per BT's suggestion about UMG which mirrored a recent thought of mine , regarding encoding (otherwise known as slipping in the Fraunhofer), here are some handy starting points -
general UMG page
Universal Music Group labels
Fontana Distribution - a subsidiary which handles distribution for, as I recently came to discover, Eagle Rock (US), amongst others including Telarc. I'm fairly certain I encountered some Telarc downloads at some point since all this started but I'll have to do some research as to their nature.
Best news I can personally vouch for - Rounder Records releases do not seem to have been affected, and the newer drops are in LAME encoding.
Thus far the couple of post 1/15/11 UMG downloads I've tried (promised to be in LAME) have been in LAME. If anyone comes up with anything different please post.

ETA: Wanderer showed up for Sony. Jazzshrink showed up for UMG. They are not one and the same, but they might stand together in line at the same business hotel buffets.
Apologies to Jazzmine. amclark set me straight.
Yeah, just put a few things on there. Usually I stop at emusers first, but Tuesday mornings it's always emu that sees the sunrise.
I'm okay with the mods deleting my posts to clean the thread up and get it back to its original purpose.
