Jazz: Things My Wife Says Mini-Reviews

edited June 2011 in General
So, as part of the AAJ dotd, they added on a little Editor's Notes section on each individual song download page. I can fit in four or five sentences of praise or pith, whatever I decide. Considering that many of the tracks getting featured are as a result of my invitation to participate, obviously my ears interest was already piqued from the samples on the emu new releases pages.

So we're in my writing room. I'm doing some work on dotd scheduling, listening to tracks to be sure they uploaded properly, etc. I ask Katie what she thinks about a particular tune. My much to amused surprise, she goes off on this stream of conscious imagery painting that sucks me right in. She's talking about shopping in classy 1960's outdoor malls and having drinks by the fountain. Or riding up mirrored elevators in hi-rise office towers to an appointment in an a-line skirt. Or watching a street festival surrounded by tourists on a New York street.. with each successive song I play, another imaginary vignette of a scene the song would be a soundtrack to.

So I started writing them down. They're brilliant.

What the fuck am I supposed to do with these things? I mean, I don't want to alienate any of the musicians I'm trying to advocate for. And it's not like she's trashing them or anything, but hell, an artist puts their heart into their craft, they might bristle at someone saying that their music makes them want to shop or it's something that would be playing in a high-rise office tower as the receptionist directs you to your floor.

I'm gonna keep writing these down. I'm pretty sure, one day, they'll make us a fortune.

  • I am quite nosy and do not wait until "one day".
  • Perhaps what I will do is post my own mini-review with my wife's just below it. No attribution to the artist. Anyone interested in listening to the songs as they read along, I can whisper the info as well as a place to stream the music. Many of them will have a bandcamp page, but there's other place I can direct you.

Maybe I'll do the first couple this weekend. Maybe. I'll be in Louisville for the weekend, and then next week is our first-date anniversary as well as the Big W anniversary day. Lots going on.

My enthusiasm for this, I don't think it's gonna wane.

Heh, jazz humor. Not a huge market for that.
  • You could certainly put them all here linked to the AAJ dotd - we won't mind, in fact I'd find them interesting listening to the track to see if I get the same image!
