  • Hey Jonah, have been meaning to mention we're planning a trip to the Detroit Jazz Fest in direct response to AAJ banner ad. My wife has family up there, and I owe her a trip, so when I saw that ad the deal was done. Very psyched by the lineup...http://detroitjazzfest.com/ Now just waiting for the final schedule so I can pick my shows~!
  • I think you'll have fun. I've gotten a peak at the final schedule and it looks pretty nice. In fact, I don't know if I'm just paying better attention or if this year the quality of some of these festivals has taken an upward tick in quality. Detroit, Iowa, Earshot (which, actually, is usually pretty solid), Newport just to name a few have really impressed me with their lineups. Take some pictures and share.

Hey, also, if they run Detroit anything like they do Chicago's Jazz Fest, they'll probably give you plenty of opportunity to give feedback on how you learned about the festival etc. Any chance you get to mention AAJ, do it. It'd be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.
  • I wonder...maybe bookings are getting harder to find. Or maybe the size of the jazz audience is increasing! I've been to the Detroit fest before, it is very compact (and crowded), you can see a lot. Couldn't believe that they had Gary Burton AND Dave Holland AND Joe Lovano AND Vijay Ayer, not to mention Angelique Kidjo. Want to be sure to see Curtis Fuller, who I learn is a Detroiter. Not sure I knew Toots Thielemans was alive!

Recent Additions: Added Bram Weijters Quintet, Koen Nys Quartet, and Ivan Gazon to the first week of September.

Recent Changes: Dutch Jazz Week (pending) set for second week of September. Also, Thomas Bergeron feature date waiting on live show schedule date.

    Most recent dotd schedule updated.
  • Loving Bram Weijters.

Have you considered featuring one of Michael Braam's projects for Dutch week?
  • Dutch Week, if it happens, is part of a larger scope project of which I am currently on the outside looking in. My guess is that my only contribution to the dotd will be to be sure that the songs play and download okay.

I will however look into Michael Braam. That name doesn't ring any bells. Thanks.
  • I came across some of his ensembles at Amie: Trio Braamdejoodevatcher and Bik Bent Braam. Here's an AAJ of one of the former's albums.

  • Hmm, what's going on Sept 8 & 9, I wonder?

I'm making my plans for Detroit Jazz Fest...Aim to see Curtis Fuller and Toots Thieleman on Sat (with the in-laws), then at least Paquito d'Rivera and Vijay on Sunday. Hope to catch Randy Weston at Thursday night opener of Chicago Fest as well.

    Hmm, what's going on Sept 8 & 9, I wonder?

Bram Weijters and Tommy Thomas have been rescheduled to those dates so that I could put Avishai Cohen and Steve Coleman tracks in their original spots, respectively.

I'm beginning an attempt to synch up my dotd with the Articles/Review desk, both on interviews and reviews. Not easy, though, because I usually don't know about either until maybe 7-10 days out of publish date and my dotd schedule typically is solid for two months. So I've begun leaving reserved dates in the calendar, one a week, so that I can use it for last minute review/interview stuff. We'll see how it works, but I think it would be nice for somebody to be able to read a review of an album and listen to a song from it at the same time.

P.S. Have fun at the fest. Randy's new album is getting some rave reviews.
