i'm going to chx into this after i purge my emu account (ok, i stuck around once i was assured i would get 30 plus the 15 bonus trax...there's a couple bassholes rekkids that i can abuse album pricing. but then. srsly. i'm srsly done.
by the by, i have a bunch of cd's boxed away - can we do a cd exchange here? mebbe everyone put together a spreadsheet of material they'd offer for exchange...if folks can do a 1 to 1 and agree on reasonable shipping timeframes then it might work.
...or i might just be the odd dog who has boxed away all his cd's.
Yesterday was quite the good day for drops - both my girlfriend and I maxed out our freebies 3 times (every 8 hours).
The last couple of Fridays have been good - maybe Friday is the new Tuesday?
Here's some interesting dark atmospheric music that's currently free: Ad-Ver-Sary
Check out the ant-zen label too if you like dark, intense instrumental music. A lot of their stuff is up around 30 cents a track, but most albums have 6-8 longer tracks so the average price is around $2 (effectively $1 if you buy your credits at 50% off).
I've now spent $300 there in the last 18 months (still have close to $200 in my account, due to double credit sales and REC money). Another big label drop like last month's Definitive Jux will make quick work of that amount.
I hope the Naxos drop is a sign of things to come. I wouldn't mind picking up a handful of their albums every week for free or cheap.
I signed up for Amie Street based on some smooth jazz recs from frogkopf. I only signed up to get the freebie downloads but now this place looks kind of interesting.
I guess I need to give you credit in the Simon said thread.
I'm not much into smooth jazz, but I've done pretty well on Amie in other jazz genres in the month or so I've been a member, including a few albums by musicians I'd never heard of before. I've also picked up some decent classical stuff (an area of music by cd shelves don't have much of), and some various other ephemera, usually falling into the category of shoegaze instrumental. I was fortunate to log in to Amie just before the Riceboy Sleeps album dropped, and even more fortunate I was able to give it a decent listen before the price went up. I don't think I got it free, but maybe I paid a buck. I had no idea the price would go up like it would, something to do with Belle & Sebastian I guess, which if I had known to begin with, I probably wouldn't even have given the Riceboy album a listen. Hey, Jacked, if you're into smooth jazz, you might want to check out Victor View on Amie St. I don't know if it's actually smooth jazz (these categories get confusing sometimes). I think Amie has him listed as New Age Jazz, but whatever, you might want to give him a listen. I picked up both albums, and while they don't get a lot of play on my stereo, there is a time and place for them. Let me see if I can insert a link here...
I picked up the last Ant-zen that showed up. Can't remember the name... L'ombre, that's it. I sorta got into Imminent Starvation back in my goth/industrial days - actually that was after those days but I was dating a rivethead and had a revival.
I'm getting a little frustrated with the samples not playing consistently for me at Amie Street. So half the time I just get it while it's free and preview it later. I enjoyed the first couple samples for Ad-Ver-Sary and snagged it. Thanks for the rec.
Yesterday, thanks to the 50% sale, was the first time I put real money into that account. Picked up a couple Billy Harped albums that jumped to 12 nps over yonder.
I've been having intermittent problems with samples there, too. The player thing doesn't always open. I've found that reloading the page almost always makes it work. If that's what's happening to you give it a try. And keep your fingers crossed that the price hasn't gone up.
Oh, BTW, thanks eclectricity for visiting my blog .
I appreciate your kind comments. It is not at all what I thought it was going to be but I think I am starting to find my voice that's why I haven't hyped it.
I thought it was mostly going to be about jazz, and it may yet be, but mostly it seems to be about stuff that either brings me joy or pisses me off.
The inbrowser player can be iffy at times, especially if you're on DSL as opposed to a higher speed LAN connection. Detaching the viewer seems to make it work most of the time.
Music Lover seems to really be take with the site. The one good thing about this events over at eMu during the last two months are hearing his regular input again.
I just figured out the "refresh the page" trick yesterday. I was hoping my "disable adblock" trick would work, but it didn't.
As long as we're pimpin' our blogs I'll just point out mine - THOMnottom.com. The content has really been sporadic over the last year since the birth of my daughter. My plan is to import the material from my failed music blog, and get back to the total randomness that was my posting before including subjects like music, movies, TV, and things that make me go rant in the night.
A few kind strangers checking it out might serve as a good kick in the rear - the other visitors mainly just want to see pics of my adorable little girl. I can't blame them as she's far more interesting than me.
Thanks for the recs but just to be clear, I am not a big smooth jazz fan. I take my jazz just like I take my brandy, straight. I don't want my jazz bonafides getting tarnished because of this thread. Chunky jazz rules! But I will pretty much listen to anything once.
I think most of what gets called smooth jazz is just crappy instrumental R&B, and I do love my R&B and Soul music. Sometimes the smooth jazz label gets slapped on some decent R&B
JUJ, if I may - one thing you could do is move over to Wordpress, sign up for a free blog. It's the programme that thom is using (although not on the WordPress site), it's the one I use myself, and it's the one we've been using for the Black Hole Archives. Once you're signed up - an easy process, and it's free - you can import the existing blog, and you can play around with the appearance. They have a host of themes that you can try out, and see which suits you the best. It offers richer possibilities than the Google Blog.
Someone I've always found interesting on web-design (and blog design) is Jakob Nielsen. He's very hot on how to make it good for people to read, rather than cover the thing with eye-candy. I used his book when I set up my first web-site, and found it helped. The article I've linked here is about how to make blogs that attract readers. The links at the bottom lead to articles about design consideration.
Thanks for the info. Just hitting the splash page at wordpress lets you know you are in a different kind of world (graphically speaking). It looks easy enough to sign up and I presume converting my existing blog would be easy as well.
But the one thing that has become evident is that you guys take this blogging thing a lot more seriously than I am able to. I was serious about trying to clean up my graphics in 15 minutes or less. I really don't currently have the kind of time to devote to it in order to do a proper job. Besides I can't really take on anything that is going to detract from my primary responsibilities hosting the Love Gone Wrong thread.
Its kind of fuzzy but I think I set up the blog because I was beer drunk and bored but couldn't drive so blogging seemed like a fair alternative. Blogging pretty much is the virtual equivalent of shouting back at the television for me. If it gets to be too much work it won't be fun anymore.
I mean come on really, why waste all that time and money going to school getting credentialed when I can just make stuff up and pretend I know what I'm talking about (just like everybody else). And by my count, I'm not doing to bad against the group curve.
I really do need and want your help but its probably going to have to be limited to trimming around the edges until that Nigerian prince sends me my half of the fortune he is smuggling out of his country. Only a couple hundred bucks more and he says he can clear customs and ...
For my own blog, I just took the basic WordPress theme and started typing. On the Black Hole blog, we've had three different themes in ten days, and one or another of us will probably change it again soon: it takes about a minute to do. Apart from that, it's all just shouting at the television.
"Taking it seriously" might be a little too strong. There was a time when I had hoped to turn it into a blog that would garner some real attention. But that faded quickly and I've learned to focus on just having fun and giving my friends and family a place to keep in touch with me.
I was also going to suggest Wordpress.com as Tim did, because I find that it is far easier for people to set up a clean looking blog than on most of the other sites. Mine looks so nice thanks to the Fauna theme from Joen @ Noscope. It's been a long time since I bothered trying to create my own.
Just yesterday I was talking to a friend of mine whose blog has far more going for it than mine (The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit - pop culture based so you guys may definitely enjoy his music postings) about how much harder it becomes to write regularly if there's any real effort to be made. Meaning, if I can't just type and click publish, I'll get distracted by something else...
I like the extended soundscans (1:00 on Aime Street v. :30 on eMusic). The selection is still very spotty. And it's too much work. I realize things can be cheaper on Aime Street, but I already feel a bit frantic from having too much music and too little time to digest it all. I'd feel much more frazzled, I think, if I also added the need to get a disc while it was still at a price-point lower than eMusic or other sources. I love the idea of a stock-market download service, but I've discovered it isn't for me. (And, as I've said before, I'd greatly miss eMusic's editorial content, which I think is top-notch).

quacky! lala. me x2

They make it easy to get the freebies when the classical albums pop up every 15 minutes on the button.

I don't suppose one of you happens to be Eliot.
Sadly, I also see that I have zero street cred. Nothing personal, but it looks like I gonna have to bitchslap one of yall.

That's a cool blog ya got there. Just read a couple of things but I love your style!
Bookmarked.

I think Music Therapy was the album I liked best, but I got both of them.
Cheers.

You're way past that. You're the cool cat!
cash or check - either will be fine

Your blog looks all professional-ly. Mine looks like I picked it up at a yard sale in a poor neighborhood.
Surely there must be a web page that tells you how to decrap your blog in 15 minutes or less.
