Me, exceedingly cautious about web exposure, and cyber-terrorism, but here goes....
    Dave....that was a poser, I'll bet.
First 45 - The Battle Of New Orleans by Johnny Horton.
First LP - Yesterday and Today - the Beatles.
First concert - The Rolling Stones, November 1969, Madison Square Garden, you know -" I think I busted a button on me trousers...". Apparently Ike and Tina were on the bill but I didn't know who they were so I have no recollection to this day. It's been downhill since then.
Now that I've thoroughly dated myself...
Biggest missed concert - didn't really like Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother that much so I declined an invitation to see a concert at Radio City Music Hall - something called the Dark Side of the Moon. Wasn't really aware of the magnitude of my miscalculation until years later when I (re)discovered Floyd. It still hurts.
Most surprisingly good concert I didn't really want to go to - didn't really dig the Mothers of Invention, but I very reluctantly went along to a concert at the Felt Forum by Frank Zappa - turned out to be Frank conducting a 20 piece orchestra, no vocals, and of course playing the crap out of the guitar. The music was phenomenal.
  • 68!

My good buddy saw Pere Ubu warm up for the Pixies in Chicago (at the Metro, maybe?) many moons ago, and the same thing happened to him. The crowd parted and all of a sudden David Thomas was standing next to him up front. My buddy - who worshipped at the same Ubu Shrine that I did in East Lansing back in the late '70s, babbled something like, "Mr. Thomas, I belong to a small but devout cell of Pere Ubu fans from East Lansing!". Thomas just smiled at him and floated away thru the crowd...

    Whoah, MrBDBz!

That's one hell of a first concert! My "stone" favorite period of the Stones - Beggars to Exile...
  • Oh yeah, some of my top concerts, in no particular order, and subject to change accoridng to my mood:

*Frank Zappa, the '88 tour, Muskegon, MI

*Peter Brotzmann's Chicago Tentet, Kraftbrau Brewery, Kalamazoo, 2002

    *Primus, Rothbury 2008

*Bruce Springsteen, early "Born To Run" tour, Kalamazoo (another hockey arena), not sold out but everyone in the place knew every lyric and sang along standing on the seats

*Stevie Ray Vaughan, Val-Du-Lakes, Mears, MI, just a couple of stops before the sad Alpine Valley show...

*Genesis with Peter Gabriel, Allendale, MI, the '75 "Lamb" tour, freaking incredible

*Rod Stewart & The Faces, Kalamazoo again, '74-ish, back when Rod was da man and Ronnie Wood gave a shit

*Traffic, their last tour 2002+/-, first time I realized how good of guitarist Winwood was...

*Kronos Quartet, late 90's, a big sold-out church in downtown Grand Rapids, MI; "Purple Haze" encore...

*J Geils Band, Castle Farms, Charlevoix, MI, '81-'82+/-, the "Freeze Frame" tour, from back stage where I was a security goon, a freakin' great show...

*Camper Van Beethoven, opening up for - and blowing off the stage - REM...late '80s/early '90s...

*The Mekons, opening up for - and blowing off the stage - Camper Van Beethoven...late '80s/early '90s...

  • Fun thread. Suddenly remembering driving out New York City, 21, buying a lot of illicit mind altercation in the Park, randomly choosing a jazz concert, and walking into the middle of David S Ware in high form. Brilliant night and way to meet free jazz, and one of my favorite jazz concerts, though music for me is more internal, more headphones than concerts, and the illicit mind altercation hasn't happened since. Or at least not in the external approach.
  • Me, I'm turning 47 this year. College professor for the last dozen years or so, I teach biblical studies (so if you need a Greek word parsed, I'm all over that). Started playing guitar in 9th grade, never stopped (currently playing a Martin HD-28). Thought I was Bob Dylan til I was 21 or so, then I thought I was John Lennon for a while. Back to thinking I might be Bob Dylan again, but only at open mic nights.

Born and raised in SoCal, now live in West Michigan (yeah, I know). Married for 26+ years, two children, both girls and both musically included. Sadly, my youngest thinks she is Hannah Montana and will in fact be a rock star. My oldest now thinks she is Taylor Swift. I use headphones alot when I am at home.

I had a stack of 78's when I was a kid, including the Andrew Sisters and Danny Kaye. Loved them. First music I remember buying was Rod Stewart, Footloose and Fancy Free, on 8-track, at K-Mart. The main reason I remember this is because, back then, you had to look at the 8-track tapes through a glass door with hand-holes, then ring a bell for the attendant to come and open the case, and then be escorted up to the counter to actually buy the thing. So I decided on Rod, rang the bell, and then my mom showed up and yelled at me (really!) for wanting to buy hard rock music like Rod Stewart. Right in front of the older teen KMart Employee. I am in Jr High at the time, maybe 9th grade, and was humiliated beyond all measure. I got the tape, and played my parents "I was only joking" and "you're in my heart," and they gave tacit approval. I then cranked up hot legs with the headphones on.
  • very cool. i started taking classical guitar maybe four years ago. i read better than i play, and my understanding of rhythm and tempo are subpar, at best. i'm now taking some rock guitar lessons (currently learning the C-movable scale and handshake drugs, by wilco).
  • Not to derail this topic into a football topic, but I think the NFC North is going to be tough this year. I'm just glad Favre didn't sign with the purple.

Well, that didn't work out like you hoped, did it, cheese-eater?

    Bear down.
