Computer help?

  • This may seem a stupid question, but can I get gmail on Outlook? I changed Broadband provider a year ago, they have now said I will loose my email address in a few days time. I've already got a gmail account so that is the logical one to use instead. I'd like to use it through Outlook, but whatever way I try it just doesn't seem to want to work. I suspect I am probably not doing something that is really basic!

I've solved it now - one tick in a box was all that I was missing!! Took me an hour plus trying and once I had the settings correct it took three minutes!
  • Glad you found it! I have my gmail showing in windows live mail, so I would bet it's a similar setup.
  • A query someone might know. Is there an easy way to find out which of the USB points on my computer are USB 2 or USB3? I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on a Dell. Thanks
  • A similar problem that have puzzled me is that when I put my external HD into what the manual says it's a usb3, a pop up tells me that this unit can run faster if I put into an usb3 socket

    - Not that it's a big deal, but it is strange.
  • Exactly, BN! That is what has been happening to me...

As far as I understand, the usb3 ports have a blue recepticle, and/or will have the usb3 logo - see MSDN Blog - How to determine whether a USB 3.0 device is operating at SuperSpeed? (a Window 8 article - so for those with Windows 7 only useful for the picture of the ports).

Also, Windows 7 does not include native usb3 support - so you will need to install a driver to make use of usb3 :(
  • Thanks PaulR - I suspect my computer has probably only got USB 1 and 2 anyway, but the problem is determining which is which. There are 6 USB ports and from memory only two are USB 2, but I have no idea which they are. I've bought a new external drive to do a complete backup, rather than keep adding to my existing back, as that drive is almost full. The difference in upload time between USB 1 and 2 Is likely to be several hours!
  • Thanks GP for the link. I'd already tried a google search that didn't really help - my problem is that I know I have 2x USB2 ports and 6x USB1, but I don't know which is which. I wondered if there was a straightforward way of distinguishing them. I'll probably have to go by trial and error...

    Thanks PaulR.
It really makes no sense that there is no driver installed on a windows 7 pc with an USB3 port
    - Maybe my driver had too many beers and shouldn't be behind the wheel ?

    - And thanks GP, I found out that my USB3 port is working correctly, Hmmmm ?
  • @greg - What's the make/model of your computer? I could possibly find the documentation and that would point out which is which. The fact that it has 2 USB2 and 6 USB1 reminds me of the old Dell Dimensions, which I regularly had trouble finding the USB2 ports on.
  • Thanks Thom - your post led me to do a Google search on the Inspiron 545, and I've discovered that the two front ports are USB2. I'd tried general google searches about identifying USB ports but not about my specific computer, thanks for the inspiration!
  • Can someone give me a quick answer on this: is my graphics card dying?

    1. The computer freezes after booting up.
    2. When it reboot, it comes back in a lower graphics mode. Usually there are no problems unless I increase the resolution to its initial state.
    3. None of these problems seem to occur in safe mode.
  • If it's freezing, I would first check out the driver. Download the latest from the manufacturer, uninstall the current one, and then install the new one.
  • I did the automatic check, which came up that the driver is current. Should I do this anyway?
  • Yes, the driver could have become corrupted, so I would still try uninstalling the driver - delete files if it asks you - and re-install. The reason I point to the driver is that typically when I've seen video cards die either the screen goes blank or the graphics get garbled.
  • Well, I can't reinstall the driver. AMD's installer program keeps giving me the message, "failed to load detection driver." I can't find a fix for this anywhere.
  • Not really a call for computer help, but a reminder to back up and back up some more. My external hard drive with most of my music died rather quickly last week. I realized today though that my eMu folder and some other folders have always been on my main hard drive with also failed earlier this year, but thankfully had been backed up. I'm probably missing some music but hopefully between physical CDs, my music on Google Play,Amazon cloud, and the public library, I can get the most important parts of it back.

I also went with a fan cooled hard drive enclosure. I suspect the noncooled one helped kill the external drive a little more efficiently.

I would like to ask if anyone has upgraded to windows 10 and what you think about it.

I am reluctant because I fear that I will hate it and there is no going back.
  • Windows 10 is great until it isn't.

My files got corrupted and apparently there is no way to fix it once it goes bad.  The files getting corrupted probably wasn't Microsoft's fault but the no way to clean it up even with a reinstall is definitely their fault.  Starting with Windows 95, Microsoft has been conducting one giant beta test and Windows 10 is no different, they are constantly fixing and tweaking things that should have been rock solid before they released it. Other than that I think the interface is reasonably adequate.

I would equate your fear of updating with a fear of flying.  Statistically speaking your fear is highly irrational and you are probably in more danger by not upgrading.   But when  Windows 10 goes bad, it really goes bad just like a plane crash.  The internet is full horror stories identical to mine.

There is not much difference under the hood between 10 and 8.1 (so I'm told) but my view is this is Bill Gates' way to try and close the gap between him and Apple for example customer loyalty.

There are a couple things you will want to look be on the lookout for.  One is the whole cannot choose when to update thing.  It just does it and tells you to restart or it will do it for you.  Which probably makes the universe safer as a whole because fewer dummies will get compromised and spew spam out to the rest of us.

The second thing you will want to do is toggle off the stupid use your internet connection and your computer to update your neighbors computers where they literally use your download files to update other computers using your internet connection without your knowledge or consent.

I don't know what Comrade Gates was smoking when he came up with that one but until he is willing to chip in on the monthly internet bill I will thank him to keep his billionaire mits off of my resources.

@jackedUPjazz  - Thank you very much.

Your answer makes me even more reluctant.

Would it be fair to assume that if you had known what you know now, you would not have upgraded ?
  • I upgraded and tried it. Then I went back to Windows 8.1.

If you go back, you have to do it within 30 days.

And I keep having to hide windows update KB3035583, which is the update package that has the nag about updating to windows 10.

Quite the contrary BN, if I had it to do all over again I would still upgrade despite the grief I have encountered.  There is no rule that says Windows 8 would not have created some manner of grief for me just as painfully.

You may be able to fight city hall but you cannot fight progress.  For better or worse Bill Gates is driving the bus and we are passengers, I'm not even sure we can choose to exit the bus anymore.

Eventually they will stop supporting Windows 8 just like XP
Kritrina you are fighting a losing battle you will be dragged kicking and screaming into the future whether you want to or not.  I read somewhere that 10 is the last version of Windows and they are just going to keep updating it until singularity occurs.

If you want to feel like you are making a decision your only choice is to switch to Apple based products (which aren't any better and worse in certain ways) or Linux (which is not for anybody unsavvy enough to accept tech support information from me).  I am stuck with Windows because of some funky programs that I have to use that won't work on Mac so I'm all in.

So unless you have some weird configuration issues or outdated hardware I would say most people just need to bite the bullet and drink the kool aide.  (Hey I think that's going to be the name of my next album "Bite the bullet and drink the Kool Aide"

10 pretty much tries to correct some of the goofyness that is 8 but they both have a similar scheme.  Microsoft has a bunch of tutorials out there that will have you up and running in half an hour but for the most part you just keep clicking on icons and doing your thing.

    ps
The corrupted files probably never will be fixed and I have pretty much given up on it.  I created a new profile and started from scratch but my old files are still accessible and it is going to be a giant pain to get everything moved over.
  • I upgraded to 10 on a new computer around when it came out and have had no issues so far. (Clearly my personal experience is normative for everyone else.) iTunes on the other hand has caused me enough grief over the years that I regard the proposition that Apple knows how to write software with grave skepticism.

    Thanks to all of you.

I'm sure that jUj is right, Windows 8 will inevitably become obsolete sooner or later.

    - The very first mp3 album i bought was from Itunes, I was so disapointed with the sound quality and the fact that the use was restricted by this DRM thing.
I decided to never do business with Itunes again.

    - This is why I use Winamp as player.
  • I never took to itunes because they wanted my birthdate in order to create an account.
Alls I want to do download some music, why do you need my demographic information?

Now Microsoft is trying to do the same thing by making you provide your birthdate to create a stupid microsoft account (which windows 10 automatically tries to sign you up when you install it).

People are always harping about the government invading your privacy.  At least in theory I get to vote on who controls the government.

You had better start fearing Microsoft, Apple and Google and they don't give a shit what you think.
  • @JUJ, I don't mind new stuff, usually. I'll probably be fine when I get a Win 10 computer. Just not interested in upgrading an older machine.

The government rules about kids having certain online access is why Apple & Microsoft ask for birthdays.

I didn't go look it up, but I think the iTunes account reason is tied to the explicit lyrics thing and needing to be at least 13.

  • Katrina

I would be worried about upgrading an older computer to 10 as well so holding off may be a good decision.

They don't need my birthdate to comply with the law.  A check box certifying that I am at least 13 would accomplish the same thing.  And besides, what self respecting 12 year old is going to type in the correct date anyway?

No dear Katrina, I am afraid they are collecting your date of birth for reasons unrelated to protecting innocent babies from the interweb.
  • Advice nobody asked for, yet someone might want. Chrome has been running super-slow lately, at least sometimes...Apparently one needs to go into advanced settings and disable "hardware acceleration." Problem solved, for now.

I also finally ditched AVG Free...Computer guy tells me that Microsoft Security Essentials is as good, without the constant pop-ups. Any thoughts from those in the know?

    Still avoiding Windows 10...
