  • My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything

Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet

A Microsoft freebie - some of these songs were ubiquitous in junior high/high school, but I never had it, so the album cuts are new to me. What a lame time to have come of age.
  • Jenny Hval & Susanna - Meshes of Voice
  • I asked my parents for Slippery When Wet as a birthday gift for years. Never did get it. :(

    Om - Pilgrimage
  • Happy Mondays - Pills 'n Thrills and Bellyaches
  • Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
  • It's been too long since I last listened to Rain Dogs.

    Alexander Turnquist - "Flying Fantasy"

-Has become my retreat-from-the-world album. Good thing to have when winter blues hit, life is kind of hard in its way, and not nearly enough daylight and time to write. Just lovely.

Bafflingly out of print. Horace Tapscott arranged and conducted this very soulful big band session.

The album that kick started CD sales back in the 80s - at one stage in Europe this sold more CDs than all other CDs put together. Looking up the cover on Amazon, I see that there is a new remastered version - I am tempted!

    Marsen Jules - Sinfonietta

Apropropos of which, I was just thinking this morning that I have obtained WAY less music from netlabels this year. Is that me, or fewer recommendations on here of free/netlabel stuff, or is the netlabel thing waning in the wake of things like bandcamp? A bunch of the labels I was getting good things from seem to have gone or become idle.
  • Most free stuff I've gotten/recommended is from Bandcamp; although there are a fair number of netlables/tape labels/small labels which distribute digitally through bandcamp. Netlables I don't know, but it's been another great year for good free stuff.

Another free one. Achieves half of the Eno ambient dictum - I am not convinced of how well it would hold up to attentive listening but it's working great as a burbly background for working.

  • Edwyn Collins – The Possibilities Are Endless

    yEBXmdU.jpg
After suffering from two strokes which took him to the very edge of his life in 2005, Edwyn Collins had to relearn many aspects of language and music from scratch. The once illustrious lyricist and vocalist was only able to repeat the following words: “yes”, “no”, his wife’s name “Grace Maxwell”, and the phrase “the possibilities are endless”. The latter lends itself to the title of a new film (and accompanying soundtrack) which documents Collins’ poignant and inspiring road to recovery. As a musician, Collins needs little introduction. From being the mastermind behind post-punk pioneers Orange Juice – one of the most influential bands of their era – Collins went on to charm and dazzle many during his solo career.

I have just paid the deposit for our holiday in California next September, so this seemed appropriate!
