Hey, BN. What do you think about that Spenser Lizst recording ?
- I have only listened to the track on Soundcloud . . . A nice track by some skilled musicians, perhaps a little too predictable and laid back for my taste.
- He showed up as a Twitter follower and I thought he deserved some attention.
FMA: - "This album is the result of DJ Spooky's art residency at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Of Water and Ice is a composition for string quartet and video that evolved out of his large-scale multimedia work Sinfonia Antarctica: an exploration of the composition of ice and water, and our relationship to the vanishing environment of the arctic poles. DJ Spooky created The Book of Ice based on his travels to the poles.
All of the electronic sounds are generated by interpretations of either algorithms that mirror the geometry in ice crystals or the math of climate change data."
"It is with great pleasure that Happy Puppy announces the return of Uncle Neptune!
Yes, after a long 7 year absence from being available online, Happy Puppy is re-issuing the first Uncle Neptune album with the permission of the Uncle Neptune estate.
After releasing his first album in 2001, Uncle Neppy received some notable national attention thanks to Richardson's Roundup on CBC Radio One, and then in 2005 the world found out about the wonderful music thanks to a mention on the popular site boingboing.net.
Uncle Neptune retired from the internet in 2006, never to be heard from since. We thought this was a terrible shame that nearly a generation of internet users never got to hear any of his delightful and timeless songs (save for one track appearing on a Kazoomzoom compilation).
But recently Lee Rosevere at Happy Puppy tracked down sources close to Uncle Neptune (thanks Billyblob!) and we are preparing to release as much as Neptune's music as possible, beginning with his debut album."
- Speaking about Kora:
released 16 August 2013
Andrew Oliver, piano
Kane Mathis, kora and vocals
Chad McCullough, trumpet
Brady Millard-Kish, electric bass
Mark DiFlorio, drums More Andrew Oliver Kora Band @ Emusers
Okay. I'm on record as someone who has never really gotten Elliott Smith. I decided to give him another chance, though, when I realized I'd only really heard his early stuff while Either/Or and XO are thought of as his best stuff.
So I cued this up on Spotify:
What the heck was wrong with me? I totally get it now. Damn that's a good album.
First of several downloads from the Kora Band - thanks BN
Update - talking about saturation elsewhere here, I already have Cascades from the Kora Band that I downloaded from emusic. I've played it twice, but the last time was March 2012!
Kora again, this time with a C: "Hallelujah Anyway is an important retrospective of underrecognized and versatile cellist Tom Cora. A worthy eulogy, released one year after his death, this double-disc set includes songs written in his memory, songs that he composed for others, and a great cross-section of the myriad projects and musical contexts that Cora embraced. And that means a cross-section of all the creative experimenters and improvisers in avant garde rock, jazz, etc. spanning the late '70s through the late '90s. This collection includes some of Cora's solo recordings, as well as projects with John Zorn, Carlos Zingaro, Richard Teitelbaum, the Ex, Barre Philips, and the bands Curlew, Roof, Third Person (with Samm Bennett), the Chadbournes, and Skeleton Crew (with Fred Frith). Upbeat, eclectic, eccentric, beautiful -- it's all here. This release is not only emotional, for the intense, loving commitment it shows to Cora's music, but also important, in that it illuminates the undervalued brilliance of a significant improviser and extraordinary cellist. Highly recommended for all with open ears."
Thanks BN. Loved his last one, this sounds nice too so far.
Procrastinating badly. Have to prepare a conference presentation for tomorrow that I promised 8 months ago and now am too tired to write.

All Tyner this afternoon.
Good to know somebody's out there listening to Blind Melon, so I don't have to.
(This ^^, I have to say, is a very fine album)

See the mis-priced box set thread (5 Cd's for less than $4?).
ETA: listening to 32 minutes preview on soundcloud:
Ol' Savannah's Death on the Mountain:Dark cabaret played by a string band. Thrilling and, yes, dark.
I forgot how freakin' good this album is.
