It's Canada Day Up Canada Way - I need some help

edited June 2013 in General
Well, I like to ask for some suggestions for our 12th annual Canada Day Garden Party.
We're dedicating this year's party to Stomping Tom. He was a great Canadian with strong convictions
and a terrific sense of our country. He's sadly missed.

In honor of his memory, this year's mix needs to be entirely Canadian, although we'll consider
a suggestion with a strong Canadian connection. We'd like a few interesting anthems, lots of cities and it doesn't
have to have a connection to the Garden (but is appreciated).

Of course we'll be featuring some of your's & our's favourite Stomping Tom tunes. I'm counting on you Canadians to give us a hand.

We'll kick it off with Canada Day Up Canada Way - youtube video

Ps I'm also counting on everyone else. Party starts at noon and runs till 6.

ETA....oops, I've been reminded it's our 13th party.

  • I think you could use some islander songs, like Jack the Sailor and Song for Memory by The Once (streamable here).
  • 'Round This Time of Year by Paul Reddick would fit right in. From the Revue: Best Of album.
  • ou la route mene by Daniel Lavoie. I'm pretty sure emusic has it. Fantastic song about his Canadian homeland.

Walking Through Mist by Esmerine from the album La Lechuza. (Esmerine are from Montreal). This one does not provide any stomping but would be a nice interlude between stomping. (Just saw that La Lechuza is $3.89 on emusic - anyone still a member who does not have it, it's a delightful album, and this is a steal).

Of course there's always Bruce Cockburn (Toronto). Less obvious garden songs might include Spring Song (from self-titled debut) or Seeds on the Wind from Salt, Sun & Time or Gavin's Woodpile from In the Falling Dark.

Damian Valles (from The Kawartha Lakes according to his Soundcloud) - Ridge and Furrow (from Bow Echoes) is Canadian and garden-oriented, though not garden party music - but hey, two out of three ain't bad. Come to think of it my collection is probably not a good place to trawl for garden party things if you want the guests to stay. (Might be useful towards the end though).

Then there's Foret citadine (or better still, though less garden-tied, Enchant
  • Yikes! I just noticed I gave the wrong URL addy above. It's too late now, but I meant to paste this link

(I hate this tablet. If I would have been using my PC I would have got it right. It's so unhandy to type text for me. Especially when it corrects my words and turns them into something really ridiculous.)
  • Just a quick note before I head out to the garden.

    Thanks!

It continues here. If the rain starts up again I may be back

  • Great, confused! I will have to check out some of these other artists mentioned here.
  • A more popular hockey song in Chicago this week: Here Come The Hawks

Pretty snappy little tune, as these things go...It was written by the ad-man father of pop star Richard Marx.
  • Ottawa's Fela/funk/Afro-Cuban/World/jazz-influenced Souljazz Orchestra.

Obvious, but many fave indie pop/rock bands are Canadian, of course: Stars, Mother Mother, Metric, Arcade Fire, New Pornographers, etc.

  • Well, I'd just like to thank you all for the suggestions. I'm trying to keep up but I've got lots to do in the garden. As much as i try, they won't grow any faster than they want to. At any rate, i'm making my way through the list and adding what comes easily. However, I'm not making all those fancy links here so if you're interested in seeing the additions to this year's mix, you can see it over at emusers. I'm typing as fast as I can.

Some suggestions from some fine folks over at Emusic

  • A Stars song implicitly about Canada, the title track of their latest album: "The North".
  • BTW, Composer Raymond Murray Schafer is from Canada.
  • Just back from vacation - geez my god (I was actually born in Canada), where is Tom Cochrane and Red Rider? I personally go for "Lunatic Fringe" (I know that you're out there), but the "Life is a Highway" solo effort by Tom may be better for a nice summer's day.

    SCHRODINGER’S PARTY
    Like Schrodinger’s cat’s demise,

Howard and Lee’s Annual Canada Day Garden Party
simultaneously happens and does not happen, depending on whether you are there.

The only way to resolve this paradox is to show up.

Tuesday, July 1 Noon to 6 PM Rain or shine

So, according to Schrodinger and quantum theory, it is a fact: it cannot be a happening party without you!

Well, we've been pretty busy in the garden (or have we) and I couldn't figure out how to make this years invite show up on screen, so you'll have to imagine last years tribute to Stomping Tom inserted into the above.

If you'd like to include a Schrödinger's cat based tune into this years playlist
I'll do my best to try to get it. I'm starting it off with this
