Has anyone seen him perform, or know anything about his music? I've been offered free tickets to see him, and would appreciate any info or opinions.

Thanks for the advice, I'll take advantage of the offer and attend. Saw Bela Fleck with the Marcus Roberts Trio at the same venue earlier this year and enjoyed the show very much.
Appalachian Journey is excellent, as are the Goat Rodeo sessions. One of the unusual features of the combination of YoYo Ma and Chris Theile is that Ma does not "jam" - he needs music to play - and jamming is what Theile does best.

And I think I might have that album where he collaborates with Chris Thile.
I can't imagine that you wouldn't find it an enjoyable show. However, I've never seen him live, so I can't express too definitive an opinion.
