From the SFL(2015)- I've enjoyed all the Rhys Chatham I've heard so far...one more....with thanks Rhys Chatham - Outdoor Spell (2011) Bandcamp
Rhys Chatham has trail-blazed a course through late 20th century music, equally aplomb in post-minimalist composition as he is in punk. Not since Roebling laid his span across the East River has there been an artist who builds bridges in both how we hear music and how we can appreciate art. His latest album, Outdoor Spell, is a further document in that direction. Here has has eschewed 100 guitars, or even himself playing a single guitar, for the trumpet and voice, both electrified and dry. It is an Earthquake Island for the 21st century, tugging at the corners of new ideas, taking in forms endemic to a shared imagination and renewing the beauty there.

ps- Thanks to @Bad Thoughts & @bremble for making me think about him a little bit from Bandcamp If “The Roundabout” represented a symbolic return to Chicago, other songs were directly wedded to Ryley’s actual return there. Some of his formative musical memories had been shaped by the work of pioneering Chicago acts such as Gastr del Sol and Tortoise. “Jeff Parker was the guitarist with Tortoise, and I used to listen to him a lot,” recalls Ryley, who figured that, for the first time in his career, it might be helpful to enlist the services of a producer. With only one person on his shortlist, once again, all roads led back to Chicago. Ryley had been a long-time admirer of sometime Wilco multi-instrumentalist LeRoy Bach. Back in 2009, still in his teens, he had frequented the improv nights hosted by Bach at a restaurant/gallery space called Whistler. “For me, it was an incredible opportunity,” recalls Ryley, “…because you would sometimes also have Dan Bitney, the drummer with Tortoise, and I’d get to play with these people. I mean, they were twice my age. I’m sure they thought I was annoying at first, maybe some of them still do, but I kind of looked at them like gurus – and to have these old school Chicago heads taking me in was just amazing.”
Ps- I've really enjoyed all his work and this was no exception, thanks again.
That's a great set I discovered during the "Golden Era" of out of print jazz album blogging. I just hope it wasn't one that was password protected that I used to save as that file type Microsoft won't let you use these days. Sorry to be so incoherent!
I was at a 5 hour gig yesterday with my lovely wife helping celebrate 20 years of the Confront label run by Mark Wastell at the 100 Years Gallery in downtown Hoxton. I picked up a few releases and one of them for sale was this boy - but I'd just picked it up from €mu The track list, in typical D.B. fashion is Pre-Tea 1, Pre-Tea 2, Post-Tea 1, Post-Tea 2 Simon H Fell was playing in a quartet with Mark Wastell yesterday so it all sorta ties in.
Martyn & Four Tet - Glassbeadgames (8 Hours at Fabric Dub) & The Air Between Words Bandcamp Three years after his last album - Ghost People - Martyn joins the Ninja Tune family to present his third long player. Universally respected for his ever-evolving, but inimitable sound, the Dutch-born, Washington DC-based producer brings an entirely new sonic direction with The Air Between Words. This is an exploration of the essence of all of Martyn’s music: a rugged four-to-the-floor groove, intelligently sculpted and artfully composed. Martyn joins forces with Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet for ‘Glassbeadgames’, a powerhouse of a track that finds the perfect amalgamation of both producers’ fortés. Heavy kicks, UKG-esque percussion and swirling subs dictate the groove, whilst the melodic progressions are simultaneously melancholic and anthemic, and further enhanced by a Hebden trademark thumb piano motif.
Still working through August €mu purchases but at least I'm up to "part 2"
Black Top is Pat Thomas piano and Orphy Robinson is normally on vibes but all manner of percussion here. Special guest is Evan Parker on sax. There's a review here I've seen all 3 many times at Cafe Oto and the like but never seen them play as this trio - think I had the chance but wimped out as it was a midweek bash - the shame!
Beatport Nicolas Jaar creates slow, strange, cloistered songs with keyboards and field recordings, breath, and drums. He makes synthesizers feel like natural elements, mingled with running waters, murmuring voices, and sighing winds. Jaar called his breakthrough record Space Is Only Noise, expanded on a key track to "Space Is Only Noise if You Can See". Titles are often red herrings, but this is the rare case where we might pause and come to understand something essential about Jaar's perspective. No one has found a good box for him yet, likely because he doesn't make a kind of music, but a way of music. (In purely diagnostic terms, our own Mike Powell's "downtempo minimalism" is the best shorthand I've read, though it wisely doesn't even venture to address the music's sense.) Jaar's new EP as Darkside, a collaboration with guitarist and bassist Dave Harrington, clarifies things further, but we've got to unpack a little before we come to it. then Beatport Darkside - The real name is Michal Kaczalko, a young DJ and producer, born March 6 1995, living in Prusice. From an early age He interested in electronic music. His adventure with music began at the age of 12 yearsfrom the mixing songs at home. For serious production took place in 2011. Darkside production style is very versatile in his pieces, we can hear elements of Minimal, Techno and Tech House. Michal spends hours of time in his home studio for creating sounds and mixing of different styles in his works. - this morning's additions to the rotation should set a pretty good pace for cleaning up the garden this fall.
ETA I deleted the link to my rotation as Lastfm seems to be locking up Safari.
Yeah, sorry for messing up the link. I am working my way through a long-lost folder of Mars Volta albums from when my son collected all their CDs. This one is Frances the Mute, the other one was Amputechture. Not quite my usual neighborhood, but both very good.
more music for outer space... Bandcamp The seeds were sown on exotic stringed instruments by Philippe on sultry nights in Marseilles. Long wandering instrumentals, sometimes angular, sometimes mysterious, always operating in their own peculiar universe. Through the medium of cyberspace, these landscapes were delivered to Edward Ka-spel in London, who detected hit potential, at least with the inhabitants of the planet Glurg, and duly added vocals plus other underlying, utterly disturbing elements.
There was a logic forming in this voyage, although by the time EK delivered his interpretation back to PP, the dark matter was literally dripping from the project. Philippe added the final touches, leaving the inevitable question… Planet Earth- are you receiving us? It’s been a while…..Planet Earth, are you, in fact, STILL THERE???
