I may be the only one who didn't already know this, but there are more "Bandcamp Days" coming up: next Friday June 5 and also July 3. I am saving up a couple of purchases for 1 week from today...

Scanner (British musician Robin Rimbaud) has been inventively active
in Electronic Music since 1991 and been involved in a bewildering range
of musical activities covering sonic art, concerts, installations,
recordings and dance scores. His impeccable sonic credentials have seen
him work with such luminaries as Bryan Ferry, Michael Nyman & Laurie
Anderson.
His debut DiN solo album comes at a rather strange time
for many people. The onset of a global virus has shut down much of the
world around us and for many creatives, such as Rimbaud, the immediate
cancellation of all live performances. Rather than sit back and worry he
felt it was important to immediately embrace the tools at hand, and use
the power of technology to respond positively. Thus followed a very
successful live show broadcast on YouTube which garnered an audience
from across the globe with Rimbaud playing an improvised live modular
synth set which can still be enjoyed here:
Watching
& listening was DiN label boss Ian Boddy who immediately contacted
Rimbaud to invite him to produce an album for the highly respected DiN
label. Rimbaud thus spent the next few days recording 90 minutes of new
music using the very same set up he had used for this YouTube concert.
Boddy & Rimbaud then curated these recordings to form this solo DiN
debut Scanner album “An Ascent” (DiN63).
The nine tracks form a
musical journey ranging from gentle ambient interludes through to
pulsing machine like rhythms. There’s always a sense of detail in the
sonic backdrop which is just out of reach. A sense of yearning that
opens the album with the track “The Ascent” and flows through to the
beautiful calm ending of the final track “Counterpointe”.
This is
an inspiring album from this totally unique British artist and one that
may have never come in to existence if it wasn’t for the strange times
we live in.
A lovely mixture of Fixin' a hole and Zappa's "King Kong"

Who Do You Love (B-Sides & Rarities)
Secret Records, November 13, 2020
While Cherry Red was digging through the archive tapes from The Cryptic
Corporation they found 4 completely unknown Snakefinger recordings!
These demos are estimated to be from 78-82 when The Residents were
performing and producing his studio work. Instead of just releasing them
as a 7" we decided to pair them with other essential Snakefinger tunes
that never appeared on one of his LPs. One side collects the newly
discovered demos along with a couple live tracks that were planned to be
recorded for a new album before Snakefinger passed away. The other side
collects all the B-sides / non album studio recordings from Ralph
Records. Original art work by Stephen Somers who did our Residents
T-shirt a while back and spends most of his time working on video games
and creating monsters for the gaming world.
Pascal Comelade and Richard Pinhas met in Paris in 1974, when Pinhas was
beginning to go on stage with his group Heldon. With Heldon and,
afterwards, solo, Pinhas became the pioneer and accelerator of
electronic music in France, and a fundamental reference throughout the
world. Comelade’s electronic period was much shorter, from 1974 to 1981.
From 1983 on, he developed his policy of instrumental, strictly
acoustic music. Comelade and Pinhas met again in 2020 for this LP
album, "Le plan de Paris". It contains six titles that were either
previously unreleased or completely revisited, developed, remixed.
I see that some ACT albums are starting to show up at Bandcamp, but only as downloads - none of the ones I looked at had cd or vinyl options. Some prices are high. Michael Wollny's new Mondenkind, for example, is 15 euros (= 23.25 CDN) for the download while Presto has the cd at $20 CDN + shipping. Some older releases are at 13 and some at 9 euros.
Ned Lagin's Seastones is a pioneering electronic
composition interweaving metaphors from nature, science, art and music
and the origins of music. Reflecting the technology, science, modern
art, new ecological awareness and optimism of the times and culture,
Seastones embodies the history of electronic music by taking full
advantage of tape music, analog synthesizers and computer technology to
create pieces that are dynamic, rich and deep.
Originally released
by the Grateful Dead's Round Records in 1975, Seastones' reputation as a
gem of electronic music was further enhanced by the celebrity of the
musicians who contributed to the source material. Seastones musicians
include Ned Lagin (processed piano, clavichord, organ, prepared piano,
electric piano, synthesizers), Jerry Garcia (processed electric guitar,
pedal steel guitar, voice), Phil Lesh (processed electric bass), David
Crosby processed electric guitar and vocals), Grace Slick and David
Freiberg (processed vocals), and Mickey Hart and Spencer Dryden
(percussion).
This new LP presents two crafted Seastones sets
(Sets 4 and 5, 18 tracks) drawn from the entire Seastones composition
and contains gorgeous extended processed vocals by Garcia, Crosby, Slick
and Freiberg, and beautiful abstract instrumental passages by Lagin and
all.
