October Downloads

edited October 2009 in General
As we approach Halloween I thought it was time to start us off.

eMusic

The Walkmen - You & Me: I'm slow sometimes.
Spoon - Kill the Moonlight: See?
The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride: Do you believe me yet?
Arcade Fire - Funeral: Now you believe me.
Thom Yorke - FeelingPulledApartByHorses: Meh.

Amie Street

As per usual this is just albums I paid for or were free, but were particularly good.

Red Pens - Reasons: Twin Cities noise rock, voted best new band by The City Pages. Pretty darn good.
The Mountain Goats - The Life of the World to Come: Fantastic, as expected.
Kurt Vile - Childish Prodigy: Very good, but not great.
Mike Doughty - Sad Man Happy Man: I love Mike Doughty so much.
Alela Diane - Alela and Alina: Beautiful folk duets.
People Under the Stairs - Carried Away: Good throw back hip hop that features, among other things, Rainn Wilson, the theme to The Price is Right, and Keyboard Cat.
Glass America - Redivius: Instrumental rock downloaded on frogkopf's rec. Well worth it.
Neon Indian - Psychic Chasms: My first foray into glo-fi, and I like it.
Wildbirds & Peacedrums - The Snake: Highly recommended Scandinavian pop.
El Perro Del Mar - El Perro Del Mar: Such good mellow pop.
Sunn 0))) - Black One: Experimenting with Metal which has never really been my thing. I like some parts and dislike others.
Sunn 0))) - Monoliths and Dimensions: See above.
Har Mar Superstar - Dark Touches: Good R&B from a white boy from Minnesota. I also live less than 5 miles from Har Mar Mall, so even if I didn't like it, I would need this album.
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Fruit: Been looking forward to this for some time, and it was worth the wait.
Pony Whinny - 265 Must Have Sound Effects: This truly is a must have.
Johnossi - Johnossi: Rocking Scandinavian pop. Quite good.

Also got two albums by The Figurines, one by I Was a King, and one by Gary Numan, but haven't yet had a chance to check them out.

The Record Store

Yes I went to an actual record store, and got:

Silversun Pickups - Swoon: Fantastic rock. They actually really do sound like old Smashing Pumpkins (that's a good thing).
Gossip - Music for Men: Makes me want to dance.

Almost forgot my lala.com pickups!

Daft Punk - Discovery
Animal Collective - Feels
Phoenix - It's Never Been Like That
M83 - Saturdays = Youth
Radiohead - Amnesiac
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People

  • I've been debating whether or not to get Gossip's new album since I saw it on Amie Street... I'm tempted.
  • CF looks like you have a new album for every day of the month. How do you find the time to listen to all of that?
  • D-Tripa' - I recommend it. There are several excellent songs, and not really any seriously weak ones.

froggie - I could ask you the same! I listen all day every day at work (except when I'm in court or a meeting). It's obviously more passive listening than I'd like, but it does the job.

  • I'm being half facetious, since I've bought even more. That is a lot of music, though.

With the exception of Thom Yorke, Har Mar Superstar and the CDs you bought, I've bought all of those albums at the same places as you did.

Did you know that Har Mar Mall was the birthplace of sorts of Best Buy? That's where Richard Schulze had his original Sound of Music store.
  • I figured you were joking.

It is a lot of music, but I don't think I spent more than $50 in real cash this month for all of it. I should cut back, though.

I did not know that about Har Mar. That's a crazy area, because the Target across County Road B was the very first Target as well (new building now, though). I seriously miss all the lights that the Har Mar movie theater used to have going at night. Staples pales in comparison.

Amie Street (just the good stuff):

I picked up a whole bunch of free things from the UNSOUNDS label. I haven't listened to all of them yet, but what I have heard I've enjoyed a lot.

Kurt Vile - Childish Prodigy - wow! have to disagree with Craig on this one. I picked this up because it was still cheap and love it way more than I ever expected to.

Brian Eno & Harmonia - Tracks and Traces (Reissue) - so far I feel yawn about this. As I often do about Eno things, no matter how hard I try. The exception being Here Come the Warm Jets.

    Torche - Meanderthal. oh yeah.

[edit] Oh and I forgot - Furry Lewis - Good Morning Judge.

El Perro Del Mar - El Perro Del Mar
El Perro Del Mar - From the Valley to the Stars - I always passed this up before, but now I'm loving it, and probably going to shell out for the new one at some point. Out of these two I like Valley slightly better so far.

I also managed to get all of the slew of Control Group albums that showed up recently - I haven't listened to them all yet, but judging from Scandinavian Gold I think I will really like some of this stuff.

Fela Kuti - I.T.T. Parts 1 and 2(song) and Gentlemen (song) from Best of the Black President
    Fela Kuti - Na Poi
Fela Kuti - Beasts of no Nation
Fela Kuti - Shuffering and Shmiling
    Fela Kuti - Shakara
    Fela Kuti - Army Arrangement
    Fela Kuti - O.D.O.O.
    Fela Kuti - Underground System
Fela Kuti - Unknown Soldier (I haven't listened to all of these Fela albums yet but I know enough to know they're good)

The Cult - Love - I've been pretty lucky with freebies this month. Also managed to get all of the Skinny Puppy for free; hope they come back.

And Speaking of Freebies (new category):

I found another Uncle Owen Aunt Beru album - which I love.

Record Store: (all $5 used cd's)

    Bob Dylan - New Morning
Tom Ze - Brazil Classics, Vol. 4: The Best of Tom Z
  • Like I said, I think the Kurt Vile is good, but it just doesn't rise to that great level for me. So I'm not sure how much we even disagree on it.

I think my problem with it is that it feels really scattershot stylistically, so I never really get into a groove with it.

  • My emusic haul:

All Tiny Creatures - Segni The 1st track is reminiscent of Terry Riley and 2nd track retreads a familiar Krautrock theme, but still very enjoyable. Worth 4 downloads.
    Atlas Sound - Logos great.
Au - Versions Skipped them last year and really glad that I gave this album a shot. They get compared to Animal Collective. Maybe throw in some of the dramatism of Shearwater, and you're getting closer. I like it better than AC.
Califone - All My Friends Are Funeral Singers Cool album title.
Cedric IM Brooks - The Magical Light of Saba A good rec from 17 dots.
Embarrassment - Heyday 1979-1983 (Disc 1) Loved this way back then. Still need to give a re-listen. Amazing deal for 8 credits.
Feelies - Crazy Rhythms Overjoyed at these reissues. Both albums are great.
    Feelies - The Good Earth
Flaming Tunes - Flaming Tunes Good stuff from ex This Heat member.
Fred Frith - Rivers and Tides A somewhat minimalistic work from Frith but still very enjoyable.
Guy Clark - Somedays The Song Writes You A story telling master.
Harmonia & Eno `76 - Tracks and Traces If you like the more pastoral instrumentals from the early Eno albums, you'll like this. I've been enjoying this quite a bit.
    Health - Get Color
Japandroids - Post-Nothing Wished I picked something else.
Kiila - Tuota tuota Another good Icelandic release from Fonal. Not as striking as Paavoharju or Shogun Kunitoki but still enjoyable.
Kings Of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak What can I say, I like it.
Les Tueurs De La Lune De Miel / The Honeymoon Killers - Special Manubre
Liam Finn - Champagne In Seashells EP Doesn't hit the peaks of "I'll Be Lightning" but to nice to hear him again.
Marcos Valle - The Essential Marcos Valle Volume 2 Good vintage Brazilian.
    Micachu - Jewellery fun
Moon Duo - Killing Time EP Features member from Wooden Shjips.
Mulatu Astatke / The Heliocentrics - Inspiration Information 3 great combo.
Nisennenmondai - Destination Tokyo repetitive in a good way.
Peter Holsapple & Chris Stamey - hERE aND nOW Some decent songs but too saccharine for my tastes.
Ptose - Ignobles Limaces-Night Of The Reptiles Thanks brighternow! A French version of the Residents. Fun.
    Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer great.
Todd Sickafoose - Tiny Resistors Thanks jonahpwll for his rec here and the emu Jazz Recommendation thread. Very nice.
Uri Caine - Mahler: Urlicht - Primal Light Ambitious in its range of stylistic interpretations, but I'm still on the fence on how much I enjoy it.

Hopefully next month I'll have a good list of Amie Street items to share.
  • Todd Sickafoose - Tiny Resistors Thanks jonahpwll for his rec here and the emu Jazz Recommendation thread. Very nice.

Happy to spread the news. And hey, I don't know if that's your first Califone or not, but I have all their albums (except the most recent), and I'll be happy to rec others that I think stand out from the rest.

My emusic downloads, the first batch since rejoining. 24dls from the plan, 75dls from the rejoin offer, and 10dls for rating ten albums.

Gabriela - "El Viaje" : Brazillian vocalist who works with Bill Frisell and his crew. Bill's presence is definitely felt on this beautiful album.
Trilok Gurtu - "Arkeology" : Trilok plays with a string quartet and makes an infectiously catchy album.
Jenny Scheinman - "Crossing the Field" : Another member of Bill Frisell's crew making some damn pretty Americana.
Cluster & Eno - s/t : Brian Eno and Cluster make a brillian ambient album.
Eivynd Opsvik - "Overseas III" - As I mention on another post, imagine if a lap pedal steel guitar sat in on an Esbjorn Svensson Trio session. Intriguing music.
Avishai Cohen "Gently Disturbed" : Bass player making some of the most consistently strong music out there. If you want a good direction in jazz to explore, check out Cohen and his running crew's music.
Klabbes Bank - "Je Suis la Mer" : Perhaps the album that has me the most excited these days. It appeals to me much in the same way the Esbjorn Svensson Trio does, along with a little of the playfulness of Kamikaze Ground Crew and perhaps some of the shiny notes from Azure's "When She Smiles"
Joseph (Joe) Bonner - "Triangle" : Live trio album from one of the more underrated pianists of his time. 6dls for an hour of excellent music.
Bang on a Can - "Eno: Music for Airports" - New York collective dedicated to performing contemporary experimental music live tackles Eno's Music for Airports. Very cool and very fun album.
Do Make Say Think - "Winter Hymn, Country Hymn, Secret Hymn" : Shoegaze band. Some interesting songs, but the album is a bit noisier than the samples and myspace tracks indicated.
Disinterested - "Behind Us" : Ambient band with a decent sound. Bill Frisell makes a guest appearance on one track that everyone should own ("Blankets")
Christophe Pays - "Ellipse" : An amazing album. I don't know much about this guy, but this album is one of the freshest things I've heard lately. The interplay between guitar, piano, and bass clarinet is supremely rewarding.
Pablo Ablanado Octet - "Alegria" - Big band with some seriously big names on the scene make an album that even a generally disinterested about big bands guy like myself can really get into.

    - My turn:

Kevin Drumm - Imperial Horizon -(Hospital Productions)
    - Too uneventfull (I guess) for my taste.

Simon Emmerson - Spaces and Places - [SARGASSO)
    -Track 6 and 11
    -And last but not least:
    028947669487_185.jpg
Ambrose Field & John Potter - Beeing Dufay (ECM) - (Listen !)
    - Absolutely gorgeous music !

Grabbed this because of Nereffid's review from his blog:
"These are electronic soundscapes based around some vocal music by 15th-century composer Guillaume Dufay. This had the potential to be nothing but gimmicky crossover, but it works well, for two main reasons: Field's electronica is generally understated and always anchored to the Dufay phrases, and John Potter is in wonderful voice. That said, it's the sort of album you need to be in the right frame of mind to listen to. That said, the opening track is one of the most gorgeous things ever."

    Netlabels:

Astrowind - Kurland (Resting Bell 2009)
    - Gorgeous ambient music.

Dave Keifer - The Cartoon Mouse Regards (Bumpfoot 2009)

Three releases by an excellent Italian sax player: Sandro Marinoni - (Clinical Archives - 2009)

    Helsingfors - Schematics - (Lost Children 2009)
    - Decent math rock.

The Silent Ballet: Volume 12 (Lost Children compilation 2009)
    - Another great one in this series.

And the 4 cd release from Just Not Normal: no-R-mal (2009)
  • @jonahpwll, besides the new one, I also have Heron King Blues and Roots & Crowns by Califone. The new one is growing on me. Which are your favorites?

I debated between the Harmonia and Cluster & Eno for last month. I'll probably be getting the Cluster & Eno before long.

Lots of interesting things to check out from people's lists...

    @ Bad Thoughts:
For Rosa, Maeve and Noreen by Samuel James (after Otis Taylor, my fave contemporary Bluesman)
If he ranks up there with Otis, I'll have to check out Samuel James.

I debated between the Harmonia and Cluster & Eno for last month. I'll probably be getting the Cluster & Eno before long.

My favorite is an earlier one - "Sometimes Good Weather Follows Bad People Around". "Roots & Crowns" is definitely a favorite as well. I thought "King Heron Blues" was good, but my least favorite of their albums. Hard to sniff out exactly why it didn't quite pass the muster, but I think it has something about the way it builds from the early tracks of meloncholy brief tunes and ends on a choppy disco-ish type song. Still good though. "Quicksand/Cradlesnakes" has some excellent tunes and some average tunes. Overall, worth getting, but not before others. Califone is very entrenched in their sound. Without any preknowledge of the band, it would be tough to distinguish their first album from their last, but even then, all of their albums have a distinct feel from one another, each sounding like a fresh rendition of an old sound. They're sorta the Ramones of the alt-folk-experimental genre.

I don't know how much looking around you've done, but between the Cluster myspace page and youtube, there's a lot of free listens out there for the Cluster/Eno. And from my perspective, I've been listening to it pretty much every other morning since I picked it up, and I've not come anywhere close to tiring with it. With many of these ambient albums, there is a fine line between subtlety and snoozing, and this album, IMO, is on the right side of that line.
    Cheers.
  • @Hoosfoos: Despite your qualified rec, I took a chance on All Tiny Creatures and actually enjoyed it. Good headphone record. Thanks.

NP, I have been mulling over buying the new Roseanne Cash. I did read, on her website I think, the origin of the list. Do your ears like it?
  • @NankerP, how do you like Sensacional Soul? It's on my SFL. Sounds like a decent funky latin comp with a campy lounge sound.

  • @cafreema I like it, maybe not top ten of 2009 but then again that definition is so loose and elastic for me...It has a solid groove and it gets my head into a solid bobbing action.

Trouble is at the moment Jazz, Afrobeat, Brazilian, and Cuban are what is tickling my fancy so it'll probably be a couple of months before I sit up and exclaim, "Damn! Where the hell have I been? Thao and BLK JKS rule!" only to forget them when I discover some more traditional Laotian music. :-/
  • Thanks elwoodicious. I'll have to move them back up the list.
