eMusic tracks that can't cross the finish line

edited November 2009 in General
Since I've rejoined, I've run into a recurring problem. Some of the tracks register as a successful download, but when I play them in iTunes, as the track reaches approximately the 90% completion mark, it just drops off and goes to the next track. I've redownloaded the handful that have done this, and did not have a reoccurence of the problem; except for one. It's a 20 minute track, and with about two minutes left to play, it still goes right into the next track. It doesn't always do it at the same mark, and if I fast forward past the time mark when it last did it, there is music there. It's almost as if the song doesn't have the strength to continue, collapses, looks up at the next track, and gasps, "Go on without me."
Has this happened to anybody else? And does anybody else have a suggestion.
I work off of Firefox, and I have an older version of the downloader (perhaps the version just previous to the current one).
Thanks.

  • Now that you mention it, some of the inter-track cuts on Eldorado by ELO seem to be awfully sharp- this may be what's happening, but I wasn't sure, being unfamiliar with the album. If I ever get a minute I'll check it out.
  • I've had it happen a couple of times, most notably with the first track on the Dirty Projectors' last album.

I have not had the problem of a redownload not fixing the problem, however.

  • Yes, I forgot to mention that each time I've had this problem, it has been the first track of the album.
  • Have you tried downloading the first track singly without the downloader? If the problem disappears, it's probably the downloader having a brain fart - it's been known to do so in the past.

I have retried just the one "defective" track, but not without the downloader. How do I do that? Do you mean off the emusic platform? Or do you mean using the iTunes "Add to Library" function on the downloaded track in my downloaded files folder?

You need eMusicJ. Alternative to eMu's downloader. Simple and bug-free. You have to manually add the files to iTunes, but that is just a matter of Drag-and-drop.
  • You have to go into your account to turn off the downloader, then you download that track through your browser..

I think froggy means clicking on track 1 by itself and letting the eMu downloader get that track, then clicking on the download album button.
  • I had similar problems a few months back, I was using emusic/j, and tried the 'official' DLM as an alternative to no avail. I'm pretty sure that there was a thread on it on the boards over there, but can't find it with a quick search, there seem to be way more short threads asking about bigger acts clogging up those boards these days. Sony's arrival appears to have brought a new user group there, unsurprising really but a sign of the times over there maybe.

It was frustrating at the time, the download the first track trick worked then if you wanted the while album. Hopefully it's another temporary glitch, but emu should have sorted it fully the first time that it happened.

Thank you, mommio. It took me a while to extinguish my emusic rage and get around to trying this, but it worked like a charm. I have my tracks, finally.
  • Yes, this happened to me with one track. I still haven't fixed it, but then again, it's not exactly a pressing issue for me. I have hundreds of songs I need to spend some time listening to. :)
