Nat Birchall - "Akhenaten"

It's a powerfully emotive album. To my ears, it recalls some of the darker yet hopeful moments of the Coltrane classic quartet. Just awesome. I listened to the tunes on Birchall's myspace, then immediately hopped over to Amazon to buy it. It's on emu, but it costs 12 dl whereas on Amazon, it's five bucks.
From what I've read, it sounds like Nat has been around on the scene for decades and this is the first album where he's the leader. He's done himself proud with this effort. Nat, if you're out there, don't take so long for the follow-up; I'm ready to buy more of your stuff.
On the Gondwana label, which has one other artist on it, Matthew Halsall, who makes an appearance on this album. Gondwana is a label to keep an eye on. And I'm looking forward to more from Nat.

  • Re: emu 12 credits for a 4 track, 36 min album. That's ripe to complain to the label about that, emu's stupid pricing scheme pretty much destroys the marketability of that album onsite. It's label-mate album is 5 cr for 40 mins, so they're even drastically favoring one of their albums compared to the other. I'm guessing most labels don't even think about the problem unless it's pointed out.
