"Sending My Love" & "Color Yes"

Halsall has an amazing sound on the trumpet, and the band on both of these sessions is some of the best straight ahead jazz I've heard in awhile. They achieve a genuinely warm sound while concurrently employing the dissonance to give the music some teeth. I'm not real good at describing music, and you're better off just listening to it, anyway. Of course, there's a problem with that...
For some inexplicable reason, Halsall only provides 30 second sample on his myspace page. Same with the label site. Are you fucking serious? Samples on a myspace. Why even bother? Here's a youtube stream of a song from each of the albums...

And here's his myspace page...

"Sending My Love" is only five dls on emu, but "Color Yes" is album pricing. However, you can get "Color Yes" on Amazon for five bucks.

Despite my extreme irritation at the senselessness of not providing some full tracks for previewing, this is some fantastic music. Highly recommended.

P.S. Nat Birchall, who I recommend on another thread, plays sax for Halsell.

  • Jonah, should I assume lala.com is unavailable to you for streaming? This label's records can be heard in full there.
  • What's lala?
  • Oh, hey, I think it works for me. I'll have to check this out.
  • In case it's not clear, lala is awesome - for anything they have (which is a lot), you can stream the full album once. Really an incredible resource. Really great for checking year end lists, or, as I've started doing, going through Tom Moon's 1000 RECORDINGS YOU SHOULD HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE. And if streaming makes sense for you as a listening strategy, a cheap way to 'buy' streaming records ($0.10/track).
  • Lala is working pretty well for me so far. It rivals myspace pages for music research. Thanks for the red.
  • Sounds like another great rec. Searched around a bit and found Colour Yes even cheaper.

Nice find. I haven't used 7digital before. Should I view it essentially as the same service as Amazon or iTunes for downloads?
  • I would - it's really just another service. I believe it's been one of the more popular ones in the UK for awhile (since so many sites don't offer much outside of the US) but only recently started a heavy expansion into the US at the end of last year. It became a big hit thanks to the $4 and $2 album sales they had over the holidays.
  • Finally got around the downloading "Colour Yes" from 7digital, which will be my first 7digital purchase. I'm always hesitant about buying stuff from new sites, but looks good so far.
