So, I just posted a few things for the first time in a while on the emu jazz forum, and I noticed there's only one page of threads. What's the deal with their forums now? It wasn't like this before when I used to participate more frequently, was it? Do they have an aggressive archive policy or just really short on space or just hate having forums at all?
It makes me want to shun it altogether.

It used to be interesting to watch the regulars try and prevent some troll from taking over the entire front page by posting some I have been treated unfairly screed 15 different times.

Now, apparently nobody really gives a shit (either way)

None of the above. Threads a certain age just fade off the list display, though they exist in the database and will return on search results. The only thing happening is lower traffic.

the main page is currently 16 pages, about the time of the Sony drop it was 30+

- This is at least partly an answer. all it takes is that people wants it to be a place for exchange of views and sharing - as you do so well on this board.

-At the moment it's only abis, confused and me that are keeping the tradition of monthly downloads threads alive.

they did shorten the amount threads last. the last page used to be thirty days back now its ... like 24(?)

I don't like that 24-30 day drop-off threshold. I like to be able to browse old threads. Sometimes I might not discover an album or musician 'til months or years after he's first discussed, and it's cool just to be able to flip through pages of old threads to see if there's anything out there that I might now have an opinion with which to dazzle the emu populace. Doing a one-at-a-time search query is not only dull, but I don't trust emu's search engine anymore than the spelling ability of the posters.
Much to my profound disbelief, no one at emu asked my opinion on this. Apparently I will attempt to rectify this flagrant error in judgment by posting about it on a non-emu forum. There's an element of balance in it all if you look hard enough.

Actually my first reaction on seeing the title was "Have you checked behind the sofa?" Glad I didn't post that - wouldn't want to have further upset poor groisenberg, who I must say was very quick to latch onto the "long time users are meanies" meme. Must be a student of the boards. Perhaps he learned at the feet of Raymond?

That guy has no perspective. If he had any idea of the kind of cyberfights that develop over any conversation about Metheney, he'd have been a bit less sensitive. I mean, the topic of Metheney strains even my own strongly butressed defenses against becoming a troll, but I can't help but want to flagrantly bait Metheney fans by posting something snarky on that thread and watch the hilarity ensue. Metheney, Marsalis, and New Jazz probably start more fights on jazz threads than any other subject.

Personally, I've tired of the numerous "When is X" coming out posts. eMu's forum may be generate more direct answers from staff (notably jed), but these posts offer no worthy conversation for those who read. However, that was gentle ribbing.

Uh-oh, this may need to be moved to Fight Club if you're going to disparage Metheny...

The "when is" threads would easily be cut in half if eMusic would be more forthcoming about release dates. They rarely list more than 5 or 6 things on the front page even when they know they'll be getting them. It would be useful to have a real "Coming Soon" page for multiple genres.

The other half are not easily remedied as it's usually a question of labels. It would be silly for them to come out and let people know that they aren't getting something like the new Beach House when it's on a label they don't carry. On the other hand they did mention that more Nonesuch albums should be on their way.

Of course what would make the most sense would be to upgrade the freakin' software and allow for pinned threads - including one for questions about upcoming releases, etc. But that would make too much sense.

Inadvertently, yes. I'm aware that I always forget whether he has that extra 'e' or not, and after I grew to dislike Metheny's music and the attitude many of his fans adopted when I expressed some dislike made me stop giving a shit whether I spelled his name right or not. But, yeah, no fan likes to see their musician's name misspelled. Heh.

I agree with Thom, eMusic could be much better about release dates. It doesn't look to great when someone like Joe doesn't always seem to know. It also seems to be incredibly varied depending on country and label in question.

and yeah someone a few months ago on eMu forums asked a really easy to Google question, then got mad when I used the Let Me Google that for you website.

Apparently you can't reply to threads that emu considers "too old". I just tried to reply to an album pricing thread and was told no go.

Jonah, that's the longest-standing, most severe complaint about the emu message boards I know. It severely hampers the potential for constructive discourse, in that it forbids bumping of older but good, useful threads. I've begged for a change of that policy, and think it would probably require very little coding effort (possibly the modification of a single if clause).

I've noticed that some folks over in the classical forum know how to access the older threads, but I don't know the trick. Can anyone share on that?

Off-topic: kargatron, did you catch McCoy Tyner at the Variety?

There is at least one anomalous old thread (some lyric thread) that I've seen resurrected, figured that's a one-off bug kind of error. Never seen a range of threads that could be bumped past expiration. Finding old threads just requires googling, usually using terms you recall having shown up in the expired threads.

Yeah, what I saw was a link to an old thread. Don't recall if you could add new comments. I'll play with that.

Yeah, we made McCoy last night. Kind of a last minute deal. Glad we went. Variety isn't the "perfect" jazz venue, but McCoy was in fine form and I heard someone say the show sold out. Hope that encourages them to book more "real" jazz in addition to acts like the RIppingtons (yawn). Wish Yoshie's would open a franchise here.

I sometimes started a thread, adding a link to the old one for purposes of review. I kept some of those old classical threads alive for a time by bumping before they expired. I rarely read that board these days. I will generally read a thread started by one of the "old-timers," but there don't seem to be many of those these days.
