Last Call
What's the last song you want to hear when the bartender has stopped pouring and it's only a matter of minutes before the doorman throws the doors open wide and lets the winter night come crashing in?
When I was working at the bar, I always enjoyed it when we played Skynard's "Tuesday's Gone" as the last tune before the jukebox went dark, though Lee Hazlewood's "Jackson" was pretty nifty, too.
On the other side of the bar, if I was feelin' at peace with the world, it was either Tom Waits' "Mockingbird" or Van Morrison's "Sweet Thang". If I was feeling a bit more rambunctious, it was either The Jam's "David Watts" or Tom Waits "Step Right Up" or Velvet Underground's "What Goes On". If I was struck with a bit of melancholy, maybe something like the Tinderstick's "Nectar" or Dylan's "Idiot Wind". If I was totally smashed, which often happened whether I was working or not, then anything by Bowie; I can sing* along to all of it.
*And by 'sing', I mean 'howl'.

Comments
"tuesday's gone" is an excellent choice.
And while some of you may cringe, there isn't much that can get an entire crowd of drunks singing along like Billy Joel's "Piano Man." That's how we closed out the first night of the open mic where I met my future wife.
