Amie Street- A lesson in genrepocalypse

edited January 2010 in Fight Club
Who the hell adds the genre tags to the albums? It's the artists, right? I swear to god, I am teetering on the edge of dropping twenty bucks on the site so I can buy one track from as many albums as that will get me just so I can write a review that says nothing more than,

"Dear [band], your music is not Experimental. Not even in the context of the hypothesis 'can I take ordinary dullness to an entirely new level?' Please remove that tag forthwith, you self-deluded phony.
All my best, JP."

My wife would kill me for blowing the cash, but the catharsis might be worth it.
Those crapheads.

Comments

  • I always assumed that "experimental" on Amie Street meant "unsigned band that does not play their instruments well."
  • Huh, I thought it meant "performed by laboratory animals".
  • I assume that the artists tag their own music, accounting for the occasional "goth, country, spoken word, christian" tag sets.
  • Perhaps switching to decaf might solve the problem ;+)
  • I've also noticed that this weekend in particular seems to be a celebration of crappy Photoshop skills.
  • I'm much more irritated by the flood of Freddie K than I am by genre mislabeling. Amie St. ought to cap the number of releases one person can make in a month.
  • If they did that I would have much less Blackiss in my collection, and that will not stand!

  • I will say that I was disappointed that Blackiss didn't turn out to be a Gene Simmons/George Clinton collaboration.
  • That would make an interesting mash-up tho, wouldn't it?
  • I would totally buy that.

  • >ought to cap the number of releases one person can make in a month.

I have noticed that in the new release section there are tons of DIY songs, but on "release Tuesday" there bands that are not on the new release page. I often do not see them until the email from Amiestreet.
  • I've noticed the same thing. As a result, when looking for what's been recently released, I never go here and instead go here. If it's a heavy release cycle or I've not monitored it for a while I'll go here (and adjust the link manually as might be necessary).
  • I think it a bit odd when they don't show up on the new release list, but they do show up in a feature to the right of the list.
  • So I snagged the new Malachai yesterday. It downloaded with the genre of "Rap/Punk". It is in no way either of these things. C'mon Domino! You're a respected label and shouldn't make ridiculous errors like this!

  • Too, what is up with Folk Rock? I got the Kevin Barker, at the recc of many, and I like it a lot, but dude...You are "Rock/Pop." This has a hell of a lot more in common with James Taylor than Woody Guthrie. If you want to be folk, you need to put in some stuff about sticking with the union.

"Americana" is another one that needs to be nipped in the bud. Rock or Country...pick a lane! >:-/
  • I always thought James Taylor was Folk/Rock.
