Cincinnati recs

edited February 2010 in General
I'm in Cincy for today and tomorrow (18th and 19th). If anyone knows of any good music, book, or comic book shops (or, I suppose, a good German restaurant), throw 'em out there. I think we've got our itinerary pretty well set, but it never hurts to ask.

  • Damn, sorry I missed this post. I was just in Cinci in December for the first time in years to visit a buddy that moved there a few years ago for school. He took me to Shake it Records on Hamilton Ave. It's mostly a record store, but has books, DVDs, and random interesting stuff. We did go to 2-3 bookstores, but I sadly don't recall the name of most of them. I know one was just accross the street from UC and had a lot of books on the ground floor and basement. The other was somewhere in Over the Rhine, which is a rough part of town, but had a nice bookstore coffee shop, especially for anyone that reads poetry.

We also ate at Melt a mostly vegetarian sandwich coffee shop that was great. I would have thrown in Jungle Jim's if you had a car and didn't mind heading out of town a bit. It's a International Food grocery story that is about the size of a warehouse. It makes World Market look like like nothing.
  • We made it over to Shake It Records and spent some money there. We ate next door at the Blue Jay Diner and had a nice little breakfast, eggs and goetta and hash browns. Didn't have time to make it to the Jungle Jim or the Trader Joe's for that matter, really. We hit the Half Price Books out in Kenwood after going to the art museum, but I totally struck out there. We almost ate at Melt, but did the Blue Jay as I mentioned.
We tried to do a lot without it becoming a burden, left plenty of time to just enjoy the view, so to speak, both metaphorically and literally; we were on the top floor of the Radison in Covington (17th floor) with a view of the river and the Cincy skyline.
Shake It Records was pretty impressive. They had a bunch of stuff that I typically don't see at music stores (Efterklang, Balmorhea, tons of Zorn). My wife went nuts in the basement where they have only vinyl, both used and new. Very nice operation. The whole Northside neighborhood was pretty neat. I'm sure we'll be back in Cincy from time to time; it's only a couple hours away from where we live up I75 at 75mph.
