Dave Holland is following me

edited March 2010 in Jazz
This afternoon I tweeted about Last.fm stations that worked out well, one of which was Dave Holland. I get home this evening and find an e-mail that he's now following me on Twitter and sent me a tweet saying "glad you enjoyed the music". Now that's what I call getting involved with your audience!

  • I got the $1 Archives album, so now Dave has my e-mail, has sent notices of new things on his site, upcoming album, etc. Seems like a very smart way to cultivate the audience...especially since jazz fans are a relatively small but knowledgeable and dedicated bunch.
  • Too many people, musicians and fans alike, mourn the fact that jazz doesn't have the mass appeal that it (allegedly) once had. My feeling is that musicians should start embracing jazz as a niche market, which typically entails a personal touch (like the twitter follower, email lists, etc) and creating music projects that will appeal to that niche base (special downloads for site members, etc). Dave Holland seems to be doing that. If I recall, Dave Douglass is doing some intriguing things on his site like offering subscriptions at various levels to his music, which afford the subscriber access to free music dls, online streaming concerts, advance copies, sheet music, etc. Bill Frisell is offering flac dls of past concerts on his site. These are the types of things that cultivate a rabid fan base, but also the type of things that members of a niche market would appeal to, members who typically are willing to pay more to get more due in part to the fact that the niche product, whatever it is, is so scarce.
Just seems like a wise path to take. Nothing wrong with taking repeated shots at mass market appeal, but IMO, it's not something to build a foundation on.
  • The latest from Dave...his latest album is coming out (the one that leaked onto Amie for a while), plus various other goodies.
  • I might just buy that from him even though I got it from Amie since I'm not sure if it was legitimate. Would definitely like to encourage him with offering FLAC on his site. Plus it's just an awesome album.
  • Was gonna start a new thread on musos we follow on twitter but might just bung it here.

I have a strict policy of keeping my Following list to under 100 so I'm very selective about following celebrities.

In music I really enjoy the tweets of Roseanne Cash @rosannecash K'naan @iamknaan and somewhat music related Michael McKean (Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind) @mjmckean

Each of them do reply to fans' tweets etc (Roseanne is particularly generous this way) but I'm a bit of a coward so I just lurk in their following list ;-)

Oh I also follow the corporate Bob Dylan and Springsteen feeds and a couple of smaller labels but those are just the label putting out press releases not the people themselves so they don't count for these purposes.

    Who else is good value?

I mentioned my music list in another thread, but I'm not sure if I ever linked to it - Music Twits. I have to give credit to eMu for using their account rather well. They even do a real time release on Tuesdays when they'll mention some of the bigger releases as they show up. Wish they had been doing that when I was an annual subscriber.

The Paste and Spinner tweets can be a tad plentiful, but often get me to read some articles I would have otherwise missed.

Sloan, YLT, St. Vincent, Mike Doughty, and Moby all seem to be pretty good about trying to communicate with their audience that way (especially Sloan and Moby).

    John Mayer is just funny.
