How often do you do to eMu?

edited April 2010 in General
Once upon a time, I faithfully visited the site 5-6 time a week, read the postings, and commented several.

In the last 6-8 months, I've probably gone once a week or so, read a handful of postings with a similar frequency, and maybe posted 1-2 times a month.

Part of it is not having all that many credits a month to spend, part of it is a result of spending a fair amount on Amie Street, where the albums effectively cost half as much or less, and the chance of snagging good freebies is reasonably high.

Comments

  • I visit the emu boards daily, though I don't participate as much as I used to, perhaps. Daily here too. Amie's catalog is still too limited relative to my tastes, I go there only on interesting(-to-me) pointers to grab some stuff. I do no freebie hunting or bother with RECS or anything. I dislike browsing there, too little ability to easily browse by label or sort by date, etc. I'm glad it exists, but I'm not a fan.
  • i 2nd kargatron re: amie - i have prolly gone there 2x this year only to on the off-chance something i can't find elsewhere might be there. i've dl'd 2 rekkids this year from amie.

re: emu - similar to frog. altho i may go longer stretches without posting. shame, brighter has mastered the art of audio links.
  • I check out eMu daily, but post fairly rarely. I think it's mostly just out of habit that I even go there.

I do still enjoy reading the stuff on 17dots, though.

  • I spend much more time on Amie Street than on eMusic these days. I maybe visit the eMu boards once or twice a week, used to be pretty much every day, and I almost never post there anymore. Amie still gets lots of stuff that interests me, and it's invariably a better deal than eMu for albums that are on both sites. eMu still has a much better selection but I tend to spend my eMu credits on on artists I'm already familiar with, while I can take a flier on unknown or unheard artists at Amie without putting a dent in my music budget.
  • I often forget to go to Amie, but still do from time to time. I make sure I've got ten bucks on my account in case something interesting pops up while I'm there.
I rarely check the emu forums. I'll check out the Gen section just for shits and giggles, but also in case somebody has a problem I can offer some advice on. I also stop in at the Jazz section, but between AAJ and here, I really don't need any more spots to post about jazz. Besides, it's not exactly a hotbed or jazz discussions.
  • visit emusic daily, don't do much posting....i did bump my downloads back up to 24/month and have actually boostered a couple of times; the face of emusic is not very pleasant to look at anymore but the depth of the selection of music that interests me is still far greater than anything else out there.

never been to amie street but i been to Oklahoma
  • I'm a daily eMu visitor but it is mostly to dig deep into the catalog and add to my SFL, occasionally I'll glance at the boards but I have largely soured on posting there after the Sony debacle. Amie Street is pretty much Tuesdays and the occasional Friday or whenever someone posts a "Hey! This [album|artist] is righteous and cheap!".
  • I pretty much visit eMu daily, mostly to see if anything interesting pops up on the Recommended For You, or to Browse the new additions (or I scan them here). The Save For Later is packed, but I'm more perspicacious about what I choose to download, sometimes I need to contemplate for a while. The Boards aren't as interesting as they used to be - the lack of vitriol is a bit boring, and on the other hand the excesses of vitriol last year have led me to post less often. I'm just tired of posting any fix-it type stuff because 1. it rarely happens, and 2. I still am smarting over the dramatic decrease in Downloads. I do look for any heads ups on good finds, or new stuff that's worthwhile. Amie is tough to keep up with the kernels in the chaff - there's a certain element of luck in getting the good stuff. I do keep Amie open when I go through the SFL's on eMu just to doublecheck if they have it cheaper - I only have one thing to say there - Jim Lauderdale.
  • I still grab the daily free track. I usually check the MB, but rarely is there a topic that interests me anymore. Even the trolls are pretty blah. I think that the only reason I go to the message boards is to click through to 17Dots, which I never bookmarked.

Like my kids and Easter Candy, I usually plow through my monthly allotment in a few minutes, since my SFL is overflowing.
  • BigD, thanks for the reminder on Jim Lauderdale at Amie...A bunch of great albums, all under $5 (and a couple around $2).
  • I still hit both eMu and Amie most days. Sitting in front of the computer for 10 hours a day provides you with plenty of time to dilly dally about almost any site that interests you. Plus I still typically get the daily d/l if nothing else. But I have to admit that I barely explore at all anymore - at least at eMu. I'll maybe hit the boards to see if there's anything interesting going on, but my exploration tends to veer towards Amie's back catalog - which still has plenty of great deals hidden by a weak interface.

I can confirm this dilly-dallying effect. Also some sites that are not all that interesting!

I have found my enthusiasm waning over the past few months, nothing to do with emu but more to do with my circumstances. So much so, in fact, that I've put myself on hold for a while. Thing is, I still have a grandfathered plan many would kill for, so I loiter every couple of days compiling a list for when I get back.

I've also found a new distraction. Friend of mine gave me a link to a website where I could download some of his music a while ago and it has turned out to be an absolute treasure trove of new music to listen to. I'm sure I'm preaching to the converted, but in case I'm not - Soundcloud.com. It's designed to enable people to share and store music, but there are links to juno, amazon etc and I've found quite a few of the tracks available on emu.

Oh, and selfrisinmojo - Virgineers have some interesting offerings here here

    edit

Sorry, that link has nothing to do with Virgineers, got my buttons mixed up. It is, however, an excellent mix by Strictly Kev aka DJ Food.
  • i still check it every day. i've got way too much music, but sometimes i still get chills from something new, great and unexpected.
  • Once a week now... I read the 17 dots post on Tuesday for new stuff. Then probably once a week or two I go through their charts checking for albums I might have missed but others noticed.
