June 2010 Downloads

edited June 2010 in General
It has been too long since we've had one of these. I always love seeing what others get, so here's me:

eMusic
Stars - The Five Ghosts: Not my favorite Stars album, but still good.
The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang: Not quite up to The '59 Sound, but I still enjoy it a lot.
Portishead - Chase the Tear: Never been much of a Portishead fan, but this song is just fantastic.
Sleigh Bells - Treats: Rockets in to my yearly top ten.
Kings Go Forth - The Outsiders are Back: Great new soul, whose vocals don't quite match Sharon Jones, but otherwise they stack up very nicely.
Here We Go Magic - Pigeons: A handful of great songs, and a few not so great. Overall, a good buy.

Amie Street
Mike Patton - Mondo Cane: Traditional Italian songs, backed by an orchestra, and sung by the former lead of Faith No More? Killer.
First Aid Kit - The Big Black and the Blue: A little too straight folk for me, but still enjoyable.
Magic Bullets - Magic Bullets: I'm a bit confused by this band. The conflicting psychedelic and britpop influences clash a bit for me.
Samantha Crain - You (Understood): Just downloaded and haven't heard yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

iTunes
With my transferred credit of $1.00 from Lala I grabbed The Carolina Chocolate Drops cover of "Hit 'Em Up Style". One of the best songs of the year.

  • My months are all screwed up because I refresh these days on the last day of the month or thereabouts and since I tend to use my credits instantly I associate them with the following month. So my June refresh came today, but I think of it as July in my mind. So ...eh, here's a dump of the last two months

  • @NankerP, really like Geraint Watkins - Dial W For Watkins. Didn't realize he he had a newer one. Folks who like latter day Nick Lowe will dig Geraint. Also like CC Adcock, though I prefer his 2nd (Lafayette Marquis).

The new Phosphorescent is great esp The Mermaid Parade.
  • Do you kn ow Lil Band O Gold, hoosfoos? CC Adcock is in that, also Steve Riley and other Louisiana artists. Bit of a Cajun rock super group. They put out a new album this year I've been meaning to get which isn't on eMu. (Also toured Australia but didn;t come to Sydney - scandal!)
  • No, I haven't heard of Lil Band O Gold. The samples sound fun. Saw Steve Riley at New Orleans Jazz Fest awhile back (before Katrina).
  • Haven't done this in awhile. Not nearly as exciting these days. If anything this may have finally convinced me to sign up for another annual swindleee membership since I haven't been able to get a number of the releases that really interested me. This month was pretty solid for singles at Amie, but I'll skip them for brevity's sake.

Bibi Tanga & The Selenites - Dunya (really glad I grabbed this on a whim)
Dntel - Early Works, Later Versions
Goldfrapp - Head First (it's fun, dammit)
Good Old War - Good Old War
Herbie Hancock - The Imagine Project
    Hooray for Earth - MOMO
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - Stay Gold
Juliette and The Licks - ...Like a Bolt of Lightning
Juliette and The Licks - Four on the Floor
Kele - The Boxer (should probably be a one off solo, but it's cool and danceable)
Mates of State - Crushes (disappointing)
    Perfume Genius - Learning
    Pernice Brothers - Goodbye, Killer
Peter Case - Wig! (when the hell did I get this?)
Ratatat - LP4 (really love this... should be listening to it now...)
    Samantha Crain - You (Understood)
    Samantha James - Subconscious
Soldout - Cuts (thanks again to whoever rec'd this - was it elwoodicious?)
    The Acorn - No Ghost
The Roots - How I Got Over
    Univox - Univox
V/A - Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox (fantastic collection, must check out the originals)

Alright, better haul than I remembered. But it's still missing albums like the new Stars and all of those wonderful Soundway comps.
  • @thom, I absolutely love that Bibi Tanga & The Selenites album, chock-full-o-goodness.
  • @hoosfoos

here is some free stuff from the Beefeater Project dude:
    Miracord

    regards,
    flour child
  • I don't keep up with these threads like I should, so I'm gonna put what my last couple months were:

The Claudia Quintet - "Royal Toast" (great experimentalish jazz, kinda Kamikaze Ground Crew, kinda Zorn's Alhambra Quartet)
Petter Worland - "Petter Worland EP" (listed as jazz, but it's just good fuzzy electronic)
Nat Birchall - "Guiding Spirit" (jazz sophmore release as solid as his first; arguably a top-ten of the year. Coltrane fans should listen)
Fuzzy Lights - "A Distant Voice" (ambient electronic post rock shoe gaze, I dunno, can't keep up with these genres)
Dave Chisholm - "Radioactive" (big band jazz, excellent album, highly recommended)
Our Park - "If Not For You" (jazz piano trio, reminiscent of E.S.T., minus the effects)
Po - "The Sound of Summer Silence" (see description for Fuzzy Lights above)
Staffraen Hakon - "Skettir edik a ref" (peaceful guitar with some effects. Addicted to this album as my first of the morning)
Chris Lightcap's Bigmouth - "Deluxe" (jazz, clean feed label I think. Solid album.)
Eddie Harris - "Come on Down!" (Great soul funk jazz from the seventies)
Taylor Haskins - "Wake Up Call" (on Amie for two bucks. Earlier album by musician who just put out a great new release)
Sean Wayland - [Several] (I started a thread on him)
Dr. Lonnie Smith - "Spiral" (new album, haven't listened to it yet)

There's a couple others I grabbed off Amie, but looking at their names, I'm not sure if they're worth mentioning yet. I'll give 'em a listen and post the worthwhile ones later.
