James Clay - "A Double Dose of Soul"
James Clay - "A Double Dose of Soul".
James Clay (f, ts), Nat Adderley (c), Victor Feldman (vib), Gene Harris (p), Sam Jones (b), Louis Hayes (d)
He plays both flute and tenor on the album. If you're not much into flute, don't get scared away. I'm not a huge fan of flute either, but it gives a sublime quality to the compositions that wouldn't be the same without it. This is one of those albums that, at first blush, doesn't seem to stand out significantly from the crowd, but something about it keeps bringing me back to it and looking forward to hearing it again. There's balance. Everyone shares well. Sam Jones fans will be bigger Sam Jones fans after hearing this album. Everybody's play is somewhat understated, but the resulting music makes a big statement. Nice mix of slow to uptempo and back.
It's my kind of autumn album.

This looks right down my alley, will check it out for sure. I do like the flute in jazz, esp when paired with vibes.
Basically the Cannonball Adderley orchestra without Cannonball
Interesting
Interesting indeed
